This does not look like a Mk.1 Striping and bumpers are not Mk.1 I think. Link to "www.autowallpaper.de" |

Aren't they called differently in Iraq? They are locally produced, so likely much newer then 1978..I beleive they still made them a few years ago.... |

I've never heard of Passats being made in Iraq, but I did read that the government imported several thousand from Brazil during the 1980s, bypassing Volkwagen's authorised distributor in the country. |

That's a very good question (about the make/name), this car was indeed modified later than in 1978. Such 'Passat I' was unknown in Europe, and in Iraq there is a lot of them (as we can see in TV). -- Last edit: 2007-10-25 20:58:07 |

So in this case you should change orign: Germany into Brazil. The Brazilian Passat of the 80ies had not very much in common any more with the German one from the 80ies. |

Shouldn't this be origin: BR, made for: Iraq? |
◊ 2007-10-26 23:50 |
Origin: BR indeed. But I don't thik the cars exported to Iraq were different from the Brazilian ones. |

This is a Passat LSE, made between 1985 and 1988. About 180.000 units were sent to Iraq between 1983 and 1988. This specific model had some differences of those sold in Brazil, but in 1986 and 1987 some of this models were sold in Brasil. Unlike the text above, the VW Passat (not just this LSE version, but all versions) are great cars and don't have the cited problems. Most of the Passat in Iraq still survive, even under the several conditions in that country. |

Model origin: Germany — Built in: Brazil - Made for: Iraq Those seem to be very popular as white and orange taxis in Iraq. Still lots of them around. |

To Mr. Gag Halfrunt, The "Barasili" or the Brasilian version of Volkswagen Passat LSE, was not the worst car in Iraq during the eighties as you said, I have one since December of 1986 and still running perfectly so far, the troubles you are talking about were due to owners, yes it was cheap and that's why people weren't paying that care for it, now, this great car is still running in the street of Baghdad and very desireable, after people have discovered that this $2800 car is the best among the new fragile korean cars such as Hyundai and Daewoo, the Brasili is running since 23 year and I still run the A/C which some have complained that it is the worst !!! so is my car different than the others or then its the driver's fault that it suffers mulfunctions? |

@newburningman: Gag didn't wrote that, he made just a quotation of the posting of an Iraqian blogger. |

P.S. As I remember, what Canadian friends have said a long time ago, the "Dasher" (the export-name of the Passat I in Northern America) had the reputation of a cheap small, car there, too. In Europe neither. There it was seen as a reliable family-car. And it was always very popular. For many years it was the third most sold car in West Germany, after the Golf and the Opel Kadett. Since the 412 disappeared in Summer 1974 and the K 70 in December 1974, the Passat was the biggest VW car for several years - until the Phaeton came. |
