Clarkson pointed out that this camera car was a Hybrid, thus it didn't have to pay the London congestion charge, whereas the tiny 50cc Peel microcar he was driving was still charged, despite it obviously getting a much better fuel economy than the hybrid SUV. Since it's a hybrid, it's obviously the RX 400h. -- Last edit: 2007-10-29 15:00:52 |

No later than a 2006 model. |

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peel_P50 (but even considering that, that charge is strange, as a normal small city car will pollute much less than this Lexus) -- Last edit: 2008-02-10 19:07:01 |

The whole point of the congestion charge is to cut down on traffic within Central London. A hybrid SUV doesn't take up any less space than it's non-hyrbid counterpart. The hybrid exemption is just a way of encouraging people to buy hybrids (I wonder if automotive industry lobbyists had anything to do with this), which are seen environmentally friendly (they're a bit over-rated to be honest) and a step in the right direct towards reducing the need for fossil fuels. And SUV manufacturers have shrewdly started making hybrid versions to cure any guilt SUV-buyers may have about buying the gas-guzzlers (or if they find the running costs off-putting), so they can still have their stupid on-roader SUV even though it's no more economical than an average-sized family car (which is all most families need). -- Last edit: 2008-02-10 19:44:53 |
