Post war, but pre Silver Cloud, so about 53 to 56 allowing for build time. Quite odd, very modern looking back end, but very retro looking from the windscreen forward. Silver Wraith, probable, wheelbase looks short, but at these angles who knows? My best shot on the coachwork could be Park Ward, or James Young. |

This 53 Silver Wraith by Park Ward [DLW29] has very similar rear. So does a Super Snipe Mk4/4a - https://www.classiccarcatalogue.com/H/humber%201953%20super_snipe-boot.jpg , Link to "upload.wikimedia.org" - would be interesting to pin down dates to see who copied who. |

It may be that fashion had a hand in the design, and nobody copied anyone. Much as I have always thought that generation of Super Snipe to be pretty despicable, truck engine, antique underpinnings etc., I do have to say that as an integrated styling exercise, it beats the Royce convincingly enough, and probably at about one third of the £ s d. when new. The opinion is likely to have stemmed from the fact that by the time I had reached an age to know what they were, say 1960, most Super Snipes had sprouted roof racks for the ladders, and were on their last owner before the scrap dealer. My old friend, the plasterer with a penchant for Straight Eight Daimlers bought those because they were big and cheap, and he did have a certain style! I will have a butcher’s hook at the books to see if there is any reference to the Royce’s coachwork in the PW stuff. -- Last edit: 2020-03-01 20:31:27 |
