AM General M-35 (dump truck may have a different number?)

Or it could be an old army truck fitted with a dump body in Vietnam.

And it could pre-date the formation of AM General in 1971:

Among other things. I doubt that air cleaner came with the truck. :)

Perhaps this is a 5-ton M-813? Someone said those have the air cleaner mounted on the passenger-side fender.

Dump truck numbers according to Wikipedia:

M47 Truck, dump, REO AO331 gas, 2 1/2-ton, 6 X 6
M51 Truck, dump, 5-ton, 6 X 6
M59 Truck, dump, REO AO331 gas, 2 1/2-ton, 6 x 6
M215 Truck, dump, 2 1/2-ton, 6 X 6
M342 Truck, cargo, dump, 2 1/2-ton, 6 X 6, (M35A2 chassis)
M348 Truck, cargo, dump, 2 1/2-ton, 6 x 6
M817 Truck, dump, medium, 5-ton, 6 X 6
M929 Truck, dump, 5-ton, 6 X 6, w/o winch
M930 Truck, dump, 5-ton, 6 X 6, w/winch

There are a few others but those were exported to Norway; I don't think any of them would have been used in this movie.

I have a feeling that this is an M-51 with the bed replaced. Note the air cleaner:

It is a M-39 (G-744) Series 5 ton truck. First introduced in 1951 and built by International, Diamond T and Mack, from 1953 on in larger numbers by International and Kaiser Jeep.

The dump body is different to those used by the US Army (M-51), so probably a later conversion. The main workhorse of the US Army and Marine Corps in Vietnam was the M-54 version. As other versions were also used it is not possible to give the exact number. Therefore I would suggest to use 'M-39 Series' with 'International' as the maker.

It is interesting to find these trucks still in use in Africa. Government troops in Somalia are using 'Technicals' which mean a truck or a pick-up with a powerful machine gun mounted on a back.
