Interesting pic - the blue is Austin Mk1 with export lights and LHD (so either Mini or 850, depending where it's going). And without handlebar bumpers, unlike the red/black roof Cooper on the right. Which suggests handlebars were a phased introduction, not a full all-in-one-go arrival. I don't think I've ever seen a pic of a Cooper (announced Sept 61) without handlebars; the short-lived Super Seven/Mini (and twin Morris) (Sept 61 to Oct 62) seems to have started without but got them in mid-life (but before Jan 62 when Seven became Mini). There was a revision of trims in Oct 62 which simplified things (eg single Super Deluxe replaced previous separate Super and Deluxe levels) - maybe this was when ordinary Minis got handlebars. So this seems to be a late 61 into 62 photo, which because of the Super Minx Convertibles can be pinned down to June to Sept 62 window. And we have to absorb that handlebars were not a single fixed-date element. |
