They used it as an example of a Japanese car that came to Britain in the 70s and gave the British Leyland cars a run for their money. They did a few tests to see if the knackered old BL cars could match the standard of the Datsun (although I think this was in much better condition than the other cars which were only worth about £1000 each). One of the tests was see if they could stop their car on a steep slope, put the handbrake on and see if the car stayed there or if it would roll back down the hill. |

You're right, it's the tidiest 120Y I've seen in years. |

The thing with all the Top Gear cheap cars tests is they give them a budget so low (usually no more than £1500) that they can only afford worn out wrecks (it's a wonder how most of them have MOT certificates, which they must have since they usually take them onto public roads), so it's more of a farce than a real test, no one in the right mind could expect to get a half-decent example of a Jaguar XJS or BMW 635 or Porsche or other old sports car for only 1500 quid, £15000 would be closer to the amount you'd need. Even so with this particular test they weren't going for anything too sporty or luxurious, just fairly ordinary BL cars from the 70s (although that Rover 3500 was probably quite something in it's day), yet £1200 still didn't get them very much at all (I paid £700 for my Renault Clio and that kept going for 2 years without any serious problems). I wonder how much those cars would be worth if they were properly restored. -- Last edit: 2007-11-26 21:21:07 |

Interestingly, James' 'Austin' Princess was actually bought for a reasonable price. According to the score board, he spent £1000 for it. I've done some research, and discovered that a Leyland Princess will fetch for around £500 to £2000. £2000+ for a Wolseley version. |
