'81 because of slots in the chrome bumper.

Actually, the slotted front bumper would mean that it's a 1979-1980 model. 1981's were the first to have solid front bumpers.

Don't forget the mirrors... ;)

Yes, definitely either '79 or '80.
I am going with '80. Most if not all 1979's I have seen have the tall, thin hood ornaments, while 1980's had either the wider, crown ornament or no ornament at all, like the pictured car.
(Can anyone confirm that there were any '79's built with no hood ornaments?)

I've looked up pictures of 79-81 models, and I have to agree with 1980 due to the bumper and mirrors. Maybe the hood ornament came off, if it ever had one??

Also, I think this is what they call a "Landau" coupe, or however it's spelt.

Yes, I believe they retired the "Landau" name after '79 and called them Crown Victorias.

Why not a 1979 model? What was the difference between bumper and mirrors? And I agree with you on the hood ornament. In many LTD's I've seen, it seems that this was a bit of a problem.

Ok, well I've looked at all the pictures I could find of '79 and '80 LTD's, and I still think the one in this photo is an '80. The vinyl roof matches that of what I saw on the few pictures I could find of 1980 two doors. Where as the '79's I looked at all had a piece of trim stuck on there vinyl roof C pillar sections. Whether or not the hood ornament broke off or never came with one is a mystery.

Well as I stated, some 1980's did not come with hood ornaments on the lower grade models.
Here is a 1980 brochure photo in illustration:

Some pics of '80's. I think the car in this photo is an '80 LTD Crown Vic, with a broken hood ornament.

Possibly. But why not just an '80 without one originally?
I think it is a non-Crown Vic 1980 LTD.
(That year, there was an LTD S, an LTD and an LTD Crown Victoria. My guess is that only the CV had the hood ornament.)

I wish there was a way we could find out, maybe get a closer look at the hood and check for a hole or stump where a hood ornament would be. I'm having a hard time finding photos of two door coupes for this model year, and the photos I have seen are all top of the line Crown Vics. So it makes sense to think that Ford obviously produced more of them then any other LTD model. I think those pictures I listed above are '81's and have been mislabeled as '80's by the owner. They all have '81+ style mirros.

I wish there was a site dedicated solely to the 79-91 style fullsize Fords/Mercury's that had good literature to tell the years apart. I'm pretty sure i'm right about the vinyl roof thing, though.

DT, are you aware of www.oldcarbrochures.com? Just click on a make and away you go.
Excellent reference source!

Yeah, I go there just about everyday. Excellent site, but in this case there 1979/1980 Ford brochures are still low on two door coupe examples.

I think we all wish there were such sites for a variety of different vehicles

Maybe in the future some information will come up that we will be able to apply for these cars. If anything, there is actually one other thing you guys might be able to look into. You see, I know that early 1979 model LTD's came with the lenses under the headlights clear, as seen here:

I've always wondered when they went to amber, whether it was halfway through the 1979 model year or for the 1980 model year. But I can't find any good sources, so that's another thing maybe you guys might know that I don't.
