"Tritton Machine" 1915 UK..nicknamed "Little Willie"......pictured at trials at Lincoln in 1915..designed by William Tritton of William Foster and Co and assisted by Lieutenant Wilson of the Royal Naval Air Service, as an experiment to design a land ship. This experimental vehicle had Creeping Grip tracks supplied by the Bullock Tractor Co of Chicago were custom made as a unit complete with track frames and wheels and had 7 small road wheels and 5 guide wheels. The engine was the 105hp Daimler 6 cylinder as the builders, Fosters, used the same engine in their road tractors/traction engines. transmission was to the centre of the track frames, which were pivoted, and from there by chain drive to track sprockets at the rear. The hull was a rectangular armoured box made from boiler plate..armament was to be the 2 pounder gun..but was never fitted as the vehicle was only experimental and did not enter combat service..but its design was improved on and became the basis of WW1 british tanks, the tank has been preserved in the RAC tank museum at bovington, dorset, uk..where upon closer inspection of the vehicle will reveal bolt holes in the armour from fitting experimental turrets and gun mounts..the above pic is around December 1915..the bracket on the vehicles lower side is for mounting a headlamp to..one to either side. -- Last edit: 2007-12-07 18:18:04 |
