1946-52 Mark VI Standard Steel Saloon. I wasn’t aware that the invisible man drove a MkVI. -- Last edit: 2020-09-17 17:07:18 |

Bentley’s built 5,208 Mk VI chassis, of which 4,190 received the Standard Steel bodywork. I am trying to dig out the quantity of left hand drive chassis, but without success at present, and therefore less likely the number of lhd SSS cars. Without a number plate I am even less likely to know which of them this is. -- Last edit: 2020-09-17 17:05:35 |

Bentley’s built 160 left hand drive MkVI chassis according to my book, but as they are also said to have built 160 R-types according to the companion volume I am not totally happy about that number. They exported 121 MkVI cars to France, and 8 to Italy. Not all of these are certain to have been lhd, apparently people liked to have rhd cars in certain parts of Europe at the time these cars were built. I hate whitewall tyres, but if you really must have them, then you might at least keep them clean. It’s like going into the gym with dirty pumps. -- Last edit: 2020-09-17 18:24:01 |

Thank you, John for that expertise, as those Bentley + R-types are not only luxury cars but cinematic metonyms. For me they represent the elegance of the 50ies and 60ies, especially when filmed in black and white. |

Thank you for your kind remarks. I have known the old warrior in my garage since the early 60s and have to say that the luxury wears a bit thin when you are covered in oil and rust! Unfortunately b/w films make it difficult to tell what colour to look for. I am slowly working my way through the lists to find lhd Mk VI cars in dual grey, but it may take some time. The expert work was done by Mr. Bernard L. King, who wrote the books. |

Having spent time ploughing through lhd Mk VIs, it seems that I can find no way of telling which of a quantity of dual grey cars it might be. |
