Spiders eye headlights so SC1.

The date of the film suggests Series 1, but it would have been nice to see the engine.

The factory chose not to provide any identification points to tell SC1 from SC2 or S1 from S2 Bentleys.

dsl uses the type of light fitted as a guide to the series of Bentley or Royce under discussion. I, knowing how easy it is to swap the lights, (one screwdriver and ten minutes) prefer not to do so, but dsl argues that an owner would be unlikely to fit units that make the car look older, which is a good point.

There is also the matter of the small air inlets, again discussion occurs. My view is that if I can’t date the subject by something less easy to change, (fiddle) identification as S series or Silver Cloud, is good enough. The chance of being able to see the engine is not great.

The problem is, of course, solved when it is a Series 3 car and the front can be seen.

It was a point originally made by chris40, which I picked up and have run with since. Basically RHD SC1 and Bentley S1 have headlights as shown - either 2-legged or sometimes 3-legged spider doing handstands. LHD SC1 and S1 had different lights without spiders legs, as did all SC2/S2 (RHD and LHD). So it only allows RHD SC1 and S1 with their original lights to be identified; any SC1 or S1 with upgraded lights (as jfs says) would not be distinguishable.

The point about small air inlets is basically that SC1/S1 had metal (aluminium?) finish, then chromed SC2/S2 onward. Seems a solid fact, but difficult to identify in practice - usually needs a well-lit picture with dark paint to show a contrasting chrome gleam.

And a final titbit to throw in for SC3/S3 only - there are two different over-rider formats, depending on market. Non-UK/Europe LHD countries (so mainly US/CDN) continued previous big knobbly style. UK, other RHD markets (so eg Aus, NZ, ZA) and LHD Europe received new smaller simpler format without the ornate top nodule. This is an observed characteristic from our collection, so vulnerable to anomalies and being incompletely understood, but seems fairly solid. Probably most useful for rear views as the only way of splitting off small format SC3/S3 from all the rest; other better clues can be applied for front and side views.

Plus, of course, the little badges on the boot lid!
