Alvis TC21/100 'Grey Lady' 1953+ |
◊ 2007-12-30 21:03 |
Indeed, a very rare car since it seems only 48 were produced. It was launched in October 1953 ( London Motor Show ) for the 1954 model year. |

The "wrecked" car in the thumbnail looks more like a 1946-48 Dodge??? |

Yeah, they should have used a police photo of a Packard or something to look partially similar to this Alvis. |

I have to clarify, this is a 1953 Alvis. It is my dad's car, it was hired out for the movie and he still has it. It is indeed a Grey Lady and it's a right hand side drive brought over from England. That is the only discrepancy from the movie, George Reeve's car was built for American manufacture and was left hand side drive. This one is original from top to bottom and is just stunning. I love it! It will be coming up for sale soon though... if you want any info and are interested, please feel free to contact me. |

But then what about the comments above stating that it was launched as a 1954 model? |

Yes, that's one of the comments that I was referring to with my previous post. |

Comments: "a very rare car since it seems only 48 were produced" might be correct if considering that this is a Tickford DHC and TC21/100. There is a standard saloon TC21/100, also "Grey Lady" specs, that is certainly more numerous. For ford_guy: I believe that this car IS a 1953 standard configuration that was updated later to the Grey Lady specification. Finally, I am not aware of an Alvis in LHD (it was pretty much a home market car) so I don’t believe that the George Reeve's car was either. |

England uses calendar years not model years so that's why it's a '53. |

George owned a 1953 TA21 left hand drive drophead (convertible) built for export to the US, this was a gift from his lady friend Toni Mannix. Below are the only photos I have of him with the car. A close look will reveal that it was indeed LHD and apparently finished with a two tone paint scheme (note the dark hood) There were only two dealers in the entire country with one in N.Y. and the other in Beverley Hills. Logic would dictate that his was delivered by the latter, and if so then it's one of the 42 they were shipped that year. I'm not quite sure if this car still exists but I've read that it (supposedly) was in Portland Oregon circa 1991. Compounding this mystery is a report of another doppelganger in Arizona circa 2010. The owner of the latter doesn't claim that it's THE car as he lacks documentation but he does raise the possibility. Kudos to him for being not fudging the truth. |

I would like to try to make a Model of this, would anyone have a decent Side View of it? Also, if possible, a Rear View? I found a Blueprint of the Jaguar XK 140 Cabrio, which I can possibly use as a Basis, but I can't seem to find any Blueprint for the 1953 Alvis :-( -- Last edit: 2023-03-25 11:35:41 |

Would it be at all possible to get some more photos of it please? |

But this may be a starting point: /vehicle_1272895-Alvis-TC-21-100-Drophead-Coupe-1954.html Or, this. There are several back views in this link. https://www.classic-trader.com/uk/cars/listing/alvis/tc-21/tc-21-100/1955/312007 -- Last edit: 2023-03-25 15:18:11 |

Thanks very much for this :-) I found a Site which includes what seems to be pages from a Book by Louis F Koza https://www.capedwonder.com/mister-reeves/ In which are included pictures supposedly of the Car he drove, which was bought for him by Toni Mannix....which look more like the XK 140 Jag rather than the Alvis Which is odd, because Google Results showing the two photos here of George with his Alvis link to Louis F Koza, and the two cars look nothing alike :-( So, if the 1954 Alvis looks similar enough to the 1953 Alvis, I'll just make that :-) I'm guessing Silver in colour? |

1) It depends upon which of the coachbuilt variants it could be, I will look in the books. 2) Forget this silly “model year” business. The British motor industry didn’t do it, especially at the luxury end. Design changes were incorporated as they became available, and in some cases the same model ran for 5 or 6 years. Take the Bentley Mk VI, which remained as the same model from 1946 to 1952. When a more mass produced car had a major change the production of the old model usually stopped before the summer shutdown, (first 2 weeks of August usually) to permit necessary changes to the track and the jigs and tooling. Production then resumed and the new car would be presented to the public at the Motor Show in October, normally timed to match half term school holidays. Cars would be on sale then, or before. So a 1953 car might be identical in basic design with that vehicle sold in ‘54, ‘55 and ‘56. (Morris Minor Series 2, the only changes were of details), British cars tend to be dated by their date of registration, shown in the vehicle’s log book. 3) Silver was probably one of the few metallic colours available then. 4) The car shown on page 053 of the linked publication is a saloon, not a Drophead Coupé. That may explain the differences. /vehicle_608478-Alvis-TC-21-100-1954.html 5) The car shown on the next page is apparently a “Grey Lady” dhc, so I don’t understand where the differences occur. The car with the bloke sitting in it is some other Coventry make. -- Last edit: 2023-03-26 10:15:41 |

I found this from a Google Search https://www.beverlyhillscarclub.com/1953-alvis-ta-21-drophead-coupe-c-15076.htm I'll be using the photos from here as the Basis for my Plans.... The B/W Photo of George with his Alvis is two-tone On the presumption that the main colour is Silver, what would people recommend the other colour to be please? |

Since I am only 74 I was not working for Alvis when they built these cars. I retired from the company in 2007. I would have thought a darker grey, a blue, or black would have been suitable. |
