The only way to tell a Commander from a Champion in 1956 was by nameplates, side and rear. Not sufficiently visible here to read. While the President had unique side trim, the Commander and Champion shared their trim pattern. |

The script looks more like Commander to me, hence I listed it as such. Large hubcaps would also point to Commander (which seems to have had them as standard equipment, except for the Parkview wagons). Champions had small hubcaps on a painted rim. Of course, you could have the large hubcaps on a Champion, but I doubt anyone would've gone through the trouble of spicing up a police car's (real or prop) wheel trims. If this was a real police car, on the other hand, I do not think the police would favor the inline-six of the Champion over the V-8 of the Commander (this being the mid-50s and all, where V-8s were all over). -- Last edit: 2021-04-05 10:08:15 |

The 1957 accessory list shows wheel covers (as opposed to hubcaps) as accessory items on both Commanders and Champions. (I have the build sheet on my '57 Commander and it shows the accessory wheel covers that my car has.) I assume this would have been true in 1956 as well. My screen does not come close to showing which script is on the subject car but if it looks like Commander to you, we will go with that. Your observations about the police more likely choosing the V-8 Commander over the Champion 6 are quite valid. |
