We've identified this vehicle using the details you provided DAIMLER REGENCY UNKNOWN 1955 Registration number: SOE 283 Body type: 4 Door Saloon Colour: Silver And Maro Date of first registration: July 1955 ✓ Taxed Tax due: 1 May 2022 "Registration: SOE 283, Chassis Number: 91483.This car started life with a 3½ litre engine and after 30 years use went back to the factory for an engine overhaul. Jaguar had in stock the last Daimler Majestic 3.8 litre engine, so fitted that instead. The car was used for filming by the BBC in 1987 for the ‘Miss Marple’ episode “4.50 from Paddington” starring Joan Hickson. ....... Production of the Sportsman seems to have been a mere 33 3½ litre cars, and even fewer of the 4½ litre model. After only a year, the Sportsman was renamed as the four-light saloon and was offered only on the 4½-litre chassis of the One-O-Four – which was a modified Regency – and small-scale production of these cars continued into 1958, when the 3½ litre and 4½ litre models were replaced by the new Majestic 3.8-litre model." from here. |

[DF308] (and 309 for LHD) code is correct for Regency Sportsman and (as far as I can understand, which with mid-50s Daimlers is not very far) also for the Empress Mk.III. |

Yes, I think the handful of Empress IIIs were the same chassis. I have no idea why, but when this style of coachwork was carried over to the Daimler One-0-Fours, instead of being known as the "Sportsman", the model was known simply as the 4-Light Saloon. Most were 3 1/2 litre, with a few 4 1/2 litre cars being produced (chassis designation DF4**). However, in use, it was found that the larger engine was simply too powerful for the preselect O/D gearbox, and all but very few were returned to the factory so as the smaller engine could be fitted. |
