I was thinking that too, but the headlights look a bit small.

I think it is the first of the front wheel drives about 1983. The sedans had different lights to the hatches Link to "www.mazda.com.au"

i have an 87 626 and the headlights are not wide enough. it must be 323.

My headlights are the same as the 4-door hatch of 87

Agreed. This is not a 626.

This is not a 323, but a 626 Diesel - they had this front end.

@Lateef - There was never a 626 diesel sold in Australia. I've never seen a 626 that looks like this in my life.

My mother (and grandmother) owned a 626 of this generation for 5 years when I was a kid - I know what they look like (photos of them are in my profile).

The headlights at the front of the 626 are raised above the level of the grille. The bonnet does not have a straight line across it's front edge. The car in the photo here has a perfectly straight bonnet with the headlights at the same level as the grille.

They were very uncommon (don't recall seeing one myself), but here's a Mazda 626 Diesel in Sydney.

And, like I said, the 626 Diesels had this front end, completely different from the petrol versions (my grandfather had a mint-green 626 so I know what one looks like myself for that matter).

The front looks the same and the headlights look the same as the petrol version. Anyway, the diesel 626 was never officially sold in Australia. As with any car, a few private imports might exist but you could probably count them on one hand.

^ pre-production model, perhaps?

Post-production one here, looks the same: http://www.motorsbros.com/Mazda-626-20-Diesel.html (third photo from left - the green car).

Perhaps the diesel versions sold in Europe retained the same front end as the petrol one whereas those sold in Asia and Oceania (New Zealand might've had them) received this type of front end?

I found a photo of an Australian 1984 model with a different front end here: http://www.carsonline.com.au/stolen_1984_Mazda_626.jpg

I'm assuming it's petrol, though, and the headlights do not resemble those of the car in the photo above.

Somebody changed the headlights, perhaps. This one matches pretty well however, and if this ain't a Mazda 626 then I don't know what it is.
