The bumper rather says 47-48 to me, Pilou. |

I have rechecked this one and there is a problem with the trim .The trim strip on the sides of the hood is definitely 1946 because it extends to the front of the hood.1947/8 cars had a short strip with a Mercury nameplate in front of it.As you correctly point out the bumper is 47/8 because it has lateral overriders and the grille is also 47/8 with the chromed grille frame. We have already encountered a similar problem on the site with a convertible but the other way round , 46 grille and 47/8 hood trim .Concerning the one here obviously a restored car ,two explanations may be possible .Either hood trim or grille/ bumper assembly is not correct for the model year.Or as some suggest it may be an early 1947 unit built before march 47 with leftover trim from 1946 but I am rather tempted to go for the first explanation. A view of the dashboard , interior, rear deck trim design and hubcaps could help but none are available here. |

You rightly point the case of restored cars. I'm inclined to think also that this is the reason, rather than an hypothetical early 47 unit. But it bothers me not the have a model year, however uncertain, and I propose to label it 1946, first year of this design, as often done on this forum with cars produced several years with an almost identical design. |
