If the VW in the first thumbnail is the same one as the main picture, it's pre-August 1963 (Middlesex, along with Staffs, was the first authority to issue seven-digit registrations) and by the look of the wings it's had a pretty hard life. |

VW 1200 58/59 or 60. Small rear lights not incorporating any direction indicators, no indicators atop front wings, small cowl over the number plate light, low front windscreen line but larger rear window are indentification points. The other thumbnail is a much later car. |

Agreed, though I guess 1960 can be excluded because of the old type of door handles. How was it called in the UK? Sedan? Saloon? Or even Limousine? Anyway it's an Export version. |

I never found UK sales brochures for this period. Nevertheless, the book "Classic and Sportscar - A-Z of cars 1945-1970" by Michael Sedgwick and Mark Gillies calls them 1200 De Luxe. The designation "Beetle" is also widely used in UK. |

Is this right hand drive for the British market? |

The car was described as VW 1200 De Luxe and was RHD for the British market. You could also buy the 1200 which had cable brakes and was very basic, and I think did not sell well here. What do you mean by "old type door handles" please, as my 1960 1200 De Luxe definitely had pull out door handles and not push button ones. I do not wish to post my photo as it has me on it. -- Last edit: 2008-02-08 17:05:33 |
