 The easiest way to keep them apart is by the shape of the wings. The roundish, more car-like wings shown here are those of the White (or Autocar or Diamond T) M2 and M3 plus special variants based on either of these. The International Harvester M5 and M9 (plus special variants) have flatter, simpler wings and also rounded rear body edges. Have a look at all those we have listed.

The M2 and M9 have shorter bodies, the M3 and M5 longer ones.

Here we see a White M3 Halftrack (1941-43).

 This particular example also has the later style "batwings" on the upper rear body that fold down providing clearance for a rotating quad .50 cal antiaircraft system (although not seen in the photo).

 You are right, Jim. These fold down sides would make it an M16 Halftrack. But the front is wrong for the M16, as -- at least as far as I know -- all M16 had the longer front chassis with the winch. The M16A1 that were made by converting M3 Halftracks could have this type of bumper and the roller, but got straight fold-down sides. Probably this one was restored by using parts form different donor vehicles. I would suggest we keep M3 Halftrack until the owner turns up with more information.
