The fact that all the appearances of the Hudson Jet in old films are in films shot outside the USA makes me wonder: is it possible that the resounding failure of this car in the USA caused Hudson to export almost all the units to exit the stock? Considering that this car in Europe and Asia could pass for a large American car ...

Interesting theory. I think, however, that there wasn't much need to deplete the stocks, as so few were built in the first place. The reason this car failed in the domestic market was the period of decline in the American compact car, lasting from the end of the Korean war in 1953 and ending during the recession of 1958. This also effected the more successful Nash Rambler and already moribund Henry J. As there was a period of economic growth aided by the upheaval of wartime restrictions, consumers were above all interested in large gas-guzzling cars to boast their image. After the Jet was killed off by AMC executives, they tried to sell the compact Rambler in 1955 under Nash and Hudson brands, but sales declined as consumers still wanted bigger cars. The all-new 1956 Ramblers were bigger and better-equipped and sold better as a result. The 1958 recession enabled Rambler to bring back their small 1955 Rambler as the 1958 Rambler American. Witnessing their success, Studebaker caught up in the compact market in 1959 with their Lark, as did the big three in 1960. Had AMC brought the Jet on the scene in 1958, it may have fared much better. Not that they would've, as they already had more successful compact cars on their hand.

I did not know that the end of the Korean War had influenced the loss of interest in small cars ... Too bad, it was nice, not like the Rambler American

I like the Rambler, especially the 53-55 station wagons, however I think the Hudson Jet was a brilliant design set on conquering the world, unfortunately it did not turn out that way. A case of "the wrong car at the wrong time", just like the Edsel. Another factor that severely hurt sales for the Jet was the high price tag - $1849 for a base Jet when you could get a V8-powered Ford Customline Fordor for $1685.

Well you could say that having a Hudson had more presence or prestige than a boring Ford ... That's why a Smart costs more than a Dacia for example :D

Interesting. Car appears to have Jet Liner rear ornamentation but Super Jet side trim. Must be the lighting.

Jet-Liner trim without a doubt:

Sure enough, it was the lighting. Thanks, Lateef!
