Another view of it. I included diesel in the modelnames since Volvo put emphasis on that during the first years they offered diesel engines, up til 1985. |

Even if it was used commercially, I would put it in the extra info field... you really think that the info is important enough to be listed as part of model name? |

I think it belongs there, it was important at the time to show for the factory and they used it as a label on the car. On the earlier ones it was 244 GL D6, and later DIESEL on the trunk. It is the actual modelname and as long as it is possible to see or figure out it belongs in the modelfield. |

For the GL and other similar info, we used the extra info field until now |

Not always, there are some cars that have it in the modelfield, 244 GL, 740 GL, 740 Turbo and 940 Turbo. In most cases it can´t be seen, and it´s not much to do about it but when fact is known it completes the modelname and belongs in the modelfield. |

For the Turbo I see it as a different thing than GL: there are people that may be interested by 740 Turbo in particular, but not in 740 GL I guess. The fact that it is in the extra info does not mean that it does not have any importance |

So what about this problem? I still think that the GL and other info should go to extra info. The car that had this info in model field were cars added before the addition of the "extra info" field, that was actually added especially for this kind of info I think to it again because I see the "GL" for one of the recently added Volvo. -- Last edit: 2006-01-02 22:18:15 |

I think it is right decision - put Diesel as part of the name, not as extra info. DL and GL is level of equipment - just like Merecedes Benz E320 Elegance etc. |

You do as you like, but then I think Turbo and such info should go the same way. It´s equal to me if it´s an L or a Turbo as long as it´s factory denominations. For a 1971 Volvo 142 the GL would have meant the same status as the Turbo denominaton in the eighties, the value change over the years. Today a Turbo is no big deal in most cases. |

I do not know for Volvo actually, but for Peugeot or VW for example the GTI info for a 205 Golf GTI is more important than the other sub-names (SR, XS, etc. for Peugeot) |

So Diesel is a more important info than the DL/GL ? I thought it was the same kind of info. What about Turbo in that case? |
◊ 2006-01-02 23:21 |
It´s the same kind of info. SR, XS or GTI. But the GTI have fans and clubs, that´s the difference. For Volvo the first years of Dieselcars labeled as 244/245 GL D6 (1979-82) After that it was a big DIESEL emblem on the trunk for a couple of years, up til 1985 I think. After that the Diesel engine was just one among the others to chose from and not labeled on the cars at all. |

Well in this case Diesel is more important than GL/DL. Turbo has same importance I think, because they are rarer and they look different. |

Yes, and that's why I think it is important to include it in the model name |
◊ 2006-01-02 23:31 |
And the low range cars outnumber them by far |

A neighbour of ours has a 240 Diesel and it's one of a max of five 240 Diesels I've seen in my whole life. Diesels are far more rare than Turbos. I think "DIESEL" should be included in the name. |
