Before jfs says "show you half a vehicle and expect a full identification":![]() Is this detailed enough for you? |

How do we know that the inscription plate was fitted to the subject engine? |

![]() I was a bit unsure at first too but I then I thought "surely there can't be two Marshall steam engines in Estonia?" I mean, it's possible, but rather unlikely as both the Wehrmacht and the Red Army needed scrap metal for the war effort. And there seems to be at least one more Marshall in the country: Link to "upload.wikimedia.org" EDIT: I found the tractor in action - they were thankfully very kind as to add the chassis number to the description: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9jEtGH9AD0 -- Last edit: 2022-03-06 10:01:57 |

My problem is that, while you are likely to be right in your assumption, the engine does not look like a Marshall, in that it has a spark arrester at the base of its chimney, and also the set-back front wheels, both of which make it look American. I have to admit that I don’t know that much about these things, but I do know that Marshall’s did send quite a few of their products to Estonia. In respect of your 08.40 post, the other engine is a portable engine that does not self propel, and has to be towed to the site of its work, and the engine in the video isn’t the same one, I think. It seems that Marshall’s inscription plates must show some sort of sequential works order number, as similar five digit numbers appear on traction engines, rollers, portable engines and ship’s machinery. Unless an expert pops up, this may take some time. -- Last edit: 2022-02-27 09:13:11 |

This may help estimation of a likely build date. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSqS-y60PXk Somewhere just before 1911, maybe? -- Last edit: 2022-02-27 09:20:16 |

This: - https://tractors.fandom.com/wiki/Marshall,_Sons_%26_Co. suggests a build date of 1910/11 for this inscription plate number. |
