![]() ![]() All black with unique silver side tapes means the 2200 Special Six Automatic edition, which has a quirky backstory behind it. Leyland were gearing up - pun intended - for the launch of the Princess 2 series, but were hitting a problem that manual Princess 2200s were snapping driveshafts, so they wanted to divert market attention to the automatic option, and also use up surplus stocks of HLS seats before the relaunch. So the Special Six Automatic edition was created in this all-black livery with: - automatic only - HLS seats (available in all colours to clear the stocks ![]() - rear passenger courtesy lights. - wooden dashboard insert. - HLS wheel trims and chrome rim embellishers At this point sources begin to differ - eg ARonline and Leyland Princess Enthusiasts' Club- there were either 500 or 1200 made, many (but not all as some sources claim) had Webasto cloth sunroof - this one doesn't, and dates vary - some say early 77, but Glass's is specific as Feb 78, after manual production suspended in Jan 78. As pictured examples online all have spring 78 S plates, I think Glass's have the correct info, instead of a rare hiccup from ARonline. 2200 was relaunched with the Princess 2 upgrade in July 78 in HLS trim only, but unclear what gearboxes were offered. However it didn't last long, with 2200 engine discontinued in Jan 79 and new 1700 and 2000 HLS replacements arrived in May 79. |
