According to Collectible Automoble, June 2010 issue:
Quote However, one 427-powered Torino, a GT convertible, was made for use as the pace car for the 1968 Indianapolis 500.

So this is unique 1968 Ford Torino GT with 427 CID engine...

The story follows the career and progress of a racing driver who's ultimate goal is to race in the Indianapolis 500. A few different locations/racetracks were used in the filming. The Torino Indy pace car pictured features quite a lot, along with others, briefly, during the middle/later parts of the film.
Some/ a fair amount of the film was actually shot at the 1968 Indianapolis 500 race, the car pictured was actually the pace car for that race. The actual pace cars that led/were involved in the actual race on the day (actual and backup cars) had the new 428 Cobra Jet engines, which were Holman and Moody prepared. None of the cars had the 427 engine.
I own a 68 Torino official pace car which was a promotional car for Ford, not a car ordered later for a customer. I am fortunate in having the documented history for the car. My car carried film crews to and from the Indianapolis Speedway thru May of 68. I have a letter from the person assigned the car stating its usage while he had it. He worked for Wthi and was TV production director. He used the car to carry his film crews and was also involved with The Indianapolis speedway through his boss, Tony Hulman (who owned Wthi as well as the Indianapolis speedway). During the month of May for a couple of decades he also co produced the IMS radio broadcasts.
The film included a top line cast including Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Robert Wagner, Richard Thomas. From the racing side included Tony Hulman, owner of the Indianapolis Speedway and Bobby Unser, possibly others also.
My car also transported several of the race car drivers from The Indianapolis Speedway to Speedway motel. Drivers in the car from one time or another included Bobby Unser, Johnny Rutherford, Bruce Walkup, Billy Vuckuvich Jr and Larry Dickson.
I am 99.999% sure the car filmed some of the film Winning, due to a paragraph written in the letter I have, which states "the car was used on the 500 mile track surface for one film sequence, we shot the film from the car so it does not appear in the picture."
I also found an advert from 1968 from the Ford dealer who supplied the car, in Terre Haute, also where the Wthi station is based offering people the chance to appear in the film Winning and chance to watch the filming of it. I will try and attach the newspaper ad.
The letter I have, regarding the cars usage, was written by Paul Denehie, the person assigned the car in 68, to the only other owner of the car other than myself, who bought it after being used at/around Indianapolis in June 68.
Car had been barn stored and not run or driven in 42 years when I purchased it in 2016. It was put away when 6 years old, in 1974. All original car including the paint.
