It is an ex-Swiss Army Mercedes-Benz Unimog-S 404.1. |

I removed the "-" to this one and the other one, to match the other of the sites. If that "-" is needed it should be added to the other ones too. |

It seems everyone writes it differently, but I found a cover from the official spare part list writing it 'Unimog-S 404'. We should change all other variations, like 'Unimog S404' or 'Unimog 404S' accordingly. Among all listed 404 I found two 404.0 (uses the cab of 406) and two more made for the Swiss Army, like this one (different canvas cab roof). I'll change these accordingly. Antoine, could you do a batch job for the rest naming them 'Unimog-S 404.1' and best remove the chassis code ... its in the name already. |

You mean renaming what to what? There are only few "S 404", but more "404". Shall all of these become "-S 404.1" ? -- Last edit: 2008-04-07 16:24:13 |

Yes, all 404 should be renamed. ... well, all but some ... |

Done... What about chassis-codes? Some are different from the model number (400-405 for example) Two have a "(S)" as extra info: /vehicle.php?id=17855 /vehicle.php?id=18020 normal or not? -- Last edit: 2008-04-07 20:00:04 |

You mean this one? /vehicle_38598-Mercedes-Benz-Unimog-U-400-405-2000.html It is slightly newer ... No more! -- Last edit: 2008-04-07 20:24:41 |

I mean these three: /vehicle.php?id=38598 /vehicle.php?id=107550 /vehicle_92619-Mercedes-Benz-Unimog-U-1100-416.html edit: you edited while I was posting I mean, is it normal to keep that number as chassis-code just for these newer ones? -- Last edit: 2008-04-07 20:27:16 |

Sorry! I would say it is useful to have chassis codes when the model name/number and the Baureihe (what we use as a chassis code) differ. We could add [404.1] as a chassis code, but it would look a bit strange, as the code is used as the name. Only exception could be if we can attach a more detailed code to the vehicles. For the 404.1 these are: - 404.111 = French Army with short wheelbase (2670 mm) - 404.112 = military version for foreign countries - 404.113 = fire engines (military and civil) - 404.114 = Bundeswehr flat-bed version - 404.115 = chassis with various box-bodies - 404.117 = Portugese Army in Angola, had the OM 615 diesel engine I think we have a French Army one here: /vehicle_58573-Mercedes-Benz-Unimog-S-4041.html -- Last edit: 2008-04-07 20:50:48 |

Actually it is better to use chassis codes on all or none of a series, else they would be split up in the Mercedes listing. |

Okay, good point. Could you fill in [404.1] or [404.0] respectively and I will see if I can give a more precise code. |

As the code is visible all the time for Mercedes (i.e. not only on vehicle detail page) maybe we could list these with just Unimog-S as model, and the number in the code, which would be displayed at the side of the model name anyway? (to not repeat the code twice) |

I don't think this would be good, as these military Unimog-S are widely know as the '404'. The '-S' and the '.1' are less well known among fans and users (but of course should be there). |

Well, and what about that U1100? |

Both name and code are wrong. But it is not an Unimog-S, either. Giving exact names and codes can be rather difficult, especially due to the fact the names were changed over the years while the vehicles were not changed. The one in question is -- as far as I can see -- a Mercedes-Benz Unimog U65 [406] (1963). |
