Thinking Rolls or Bentley |
◊ 2022-12-09 07:20 |
I don't mean the Bentley in front on the left (which is a 1962 Bentley S-Type, S1 or S2). I know about that picture car from production documents of this unaired pilot entitled "The Vintage Years". I'm trying to identify the car parked behind it (closer to the veranda), marked with an arrow on the screen grab below. Unfortunately, there's no better shot available. I was thinking of a Cadillac Seville maybe? ![]() |

Here's one closer shot, but (to the left of actor Clu Gulager), but that's the only other screen grab I could take.![]() |

If referencing the reddish vinyl roof - a Lincoln?? |

If 62 it should be S3 (4 headlights). |

Thanks, dsl, for the note. This is the page for the Bentley: /vehicle_1332156-Bentley-S-Type.html I think the b&w picture in the comments section shows that this is not an S3 because of the shape of the hood around the headlights, so you are right it cannot be a 1962 model. Is there a way to determine the model year? |

^ Basically no. All we can say from pics on that page is 1955-61 S1 or S2. |

The first Bentley S1 cars were delivered in April 1955. (LWB did not commence until Nov. 1957.) The last Bentley S1 cars were delivered in August 1959. The first Bentley S2 cars were delivered in August 1959. (With the exception of 2 prototypes.) The last Bentley S2 cars were delivered in the months shown. B376DW was delivered in October 1962. (Standard Steel Saloon). LLB 33 August 1962. (Long wheelbase saloon). BC139CZ October 1962. (Continental). The first Bentley S3 cars were delivered in the months shown. B2AV October 1962. (Standard Steel Saloon). BAL 2 October 1962. (Long wheelbase saloon). BC2XA October 1962. (Continental). Therefore, a car delivered during 1962 could be either an S2 or an S3 if its exact date of delivery is not known, and the headlights and surrounding coachwork are not shown. This information distilled from: - “Twenty Years of Crewe Bentleys 1946 to 1965”. Bentley Drivers Club 1973. -- Last edit: 2022-12-11 16:56:18 |

I revisited our archives and discovered these two photos from the set from which I enlarged the Bentley. Does this lead any further? Thanks a lot!![]() ![]() |

We have between us identified the Bentley as a 1962 S2 Standard Steel Saloon, if the same car is that which has been enlarged, there is no more to be said. If we are now trying to solve the other car, I am unable to assist. Somebody might know what it is, but not I. -- Last edit: 2022-12-13 20:36:44 |

johnfromstaffs, yes, same car. Thanks for your input and the identification. I'm not asking about the other car. It just happens to be on the first picture next to the Bentley, and I do know it is a 1975 Maserati Merak SS (type 122). |

Thanks. There is, actually, a little more to say. dsl has a theory, to which he has referred in his comments, that might identify an S1 from an S2. The grilles on the air intakes may differ in detail, and there is a marked difference in the style of the overriders. The subject car follows the S2 theory inasmuch as we can see. However, dsl is a very genteel character, and seems to see the best in people. I take a different view of life, feeling that anything that can easily be exchanged, like overriders, that may make the car look newer and therefore add to its value, could quite likely have been fiddled, sorry, done. I would find it preferable to count the spark plugs! |
