Shetland legend has it that this tradition started when a couple of fleeing galleons from the defeated Spanish Armada were storm-driven and shipwrecked on Fair Isle, and the survivors were taken in by the locals until they were rescued several months later. To pass the time over the winter, they taught the islanders their traditional knitting patterns and dyeing skills, creating the design templates still used today.
