(sigh) It wasn't sold in metropolitan France. Subaru entered the metropolitan french market after 1992. There. |

Subaru only sold in selected European countries? They certainly were active in Belgium in the 80s. |

Import quotas on Japan-built vehicles prevented smaller japanese manufacturers to enter the french market. That's why France got the spanish Santana S410 instead of the Suzuki SJ410, or the India-made Maruti 800 instead of the Suzuki Alto. But Subaru didn't have foreign factories to circumvent quotas - although there was a plan for a Subaru factory in Angers in the late 1980s (1) - and only entered the metropolitan french market after the import quotas were abrogated. Thanks. A few protectionist measures for the native work force, nothing wrong with that. It's still mostly France that pushes for higher tariffs on non-EU imports. |

French cars as I see them: if it’s a Renault, it’s rotted. If it’s a Citroën, it has already broken down and there are no spares, if it’s a Peugeot, you can’t afford it. At least, that’s how it was in the days when I was still buying cars that aren’t German. At least we Brits have admitted we can’t build mass market cars and quit doing so. -- Last edit: 2023-03-10 08:51:11 |

ZA 971 was Saint-Martin, so it could be a personal import from the Dutch side of the island. https://francoplaque.fr/site_html/f_dom_f.html#SM |

Island of Saint Martin confirmed by the episode description. All we need now is Subaru's Caribbean brochure. |
