Did you know, that today in 2006, there is a Mercury Montery? It is now a 7-passenger minivan that shares the same body as the Ford Freestar. |

The Galaxy is now a minivan in Europe. What else is new? Love live the land yacht sedans! |

The 1961 Mercury was originally intended to be the 1961 Edsel. |

Should be listed as 4 door hardtop, not sedan. |

The 1961 Comet was originaly to be a compact version of the Edsel. The tailights on the comet are like the '60 Edsel. |

There were never any firm plans for a full sized Edsel for 1961 and the Mercury was never intended to be an Edsel. The confusion here may be that the bottom trim level '61 Mercury 660 did fill the price gap left by the absence of the Edsel. It had long been decided to have the '61 Mercury again share the Ford platform as a cost cutting measure and it was felt they couldn't market three cars on the same platform. Ford senior management then decided early in 1959 to discontinue the full sized Edsel and any '61 plans never made it past the early design sketch stage. The Comet, however, was designed as the new compact Edsel, but when the full-sized Edsel was dropped in November 1959, the decision was made to market the car through Mercury dealers as simply a Comet and many '60 and '61 Comets carry Edsel part numbers. It was not officially a Mercury Comet until 1962. -- Last edit: 2009-02-08 04:49:07 |

This car, or a similar one, was "the slammer" in the demolition derby episode "Hazzard Connection." |

The same green '61 Mercury was used in "The In-Laws". |
