... or TOO 569?? I've got a book photo of a dark blue Classic TOO 571, captioned as a prototype posed outside on a courtyard for styling sign-off before launch, but TOO series was May-Oct 62 so something's wobbly somewhere (unless 571 was the 116E revamp with 1500cc in July 62). TOO 528 was the first works rally Cortina, a tuned 1200 Deluxe on the 1962 RAC (November) and the the 1963 Monte. |

^ Surprised that the crankshaft on a tuned 1200 engine would last long enough to complete a rally. In my Cortina Mk1 days, 1500 engines were like gold dust because the 1200 were so weak, an advert to sell a 1500 in Exchange and Mart brought the world to your door. I scrapped a rusty 1500 Cortina and the engine and gearbox sold in no time. |

^ The 1500 was not homologated until about April 63 for the GT launch, so Ford wanted to get as much competitive Cortina experience into the system as possible as soon as they could. And the Lotus was on the horizon with a management target of rally dominance, so it all went into the mix. The 62 RAC spec apparently had heavy Cosworth tuning to unleash 93 bhp, but had to be detuned for Monte regs. Finished both events but way down the field after lots of problems. |

I have just been reading up and the original 1340cc engine fitted to the Classic was both underpowered and, again with only three main bearings, a bit lacking in longevity. |
