Because most people don't care about stuff like this. -- Last edit: 2008-06-24 15:20:08 |

True but I bet that there are fewer of these on the road than let's say Ferrari F360's. I know that this car looks like a pig with a grille but it's still a part of automotive history. |
◊ 2008-06-24 16:27 |
But you could say any car is a part of automotive history, no matter how crap it is. -- Last edit: 2008-06-24 16:28:30 |

It's a reminder of why the UK no longer has its own motoring industry. |
◊ 2008-06-24 22:41 |
Raul, if it makes you feel better ... http://www.allegroclubint.org.uk/ ![]() They aren't all dead yet. Someone, somewhere, is probably loving and preserving just about any crap car you care to mention; in the UK F-series Victors, Reliant 3-wheelers, you name it. |

Love the rear picnic tables in these |

I always thought British Leyland cars were all, bad (specifically in build quality)? At least that the mindset that I get from watching Top Gear.. |
◊ 2008-06-29 14:40 |
Yes, the build quality wasn't very good, but I prefer an unreliable, but very interesting Rover SD1 rather a terribly reliable, but incredibly boring Toyota. And, the BL-Austin Rover carnage isn't over yet, I think that they're going to destroy next an MG Maestro, more rare than the Allegro. I don't know if I'm going to be brave enough to watch this Top Gear season if they are going to wreck all these BL rarities |
◊ 2008-06-29 14:55 |
They took a rare car indeed - but also a rotten one. Have you seen the wheel-arches and the side-bars under the doors? It was gone. The Allegro-freaks would have mounted off some rare Vanden Plas-parts, but a full restoration would have been quite unlikely. For them a few single Vanden Plas-parts had more value than the whole car. |
◊ 2008-07-02 02:33 |
This was the UK's Cadillac Cimarron. If the Vanden Plas was an Allegro you would have paid a lot less... |
◊ 2008-07-02 19:32 |
I bet if Clarkson, Hammond and May ever saw this page, where some people are actually lamenting the demise of this and the MG Maestro, they'd piss themselves laughing! ![]() -- Last edit: 2008-07-02 19:32:23 |
◊ 2008-07-30 17:15 |
In the magazine Practical Classics, Richard Hammond said that Clarkson, May and himself all enjoy filming with older cars more than with newer ones and any old cars that get smashed up are usually the worst they can find. I bet they got that Vanden-Plas off a scrapheap. The Mg Maestro may be rare but the one they destroyed had been painted by hand! Also the Triumph Dolomite Sprint that Hammond used in series 10 has gone to a specialist for a nut and bolt restoration. |

This is an Austin Allegro, with Vanden Plas trim level. |
◊ 2008-11-18 12:55 |
No matter how rare and old this is, I feel no resentment at seeing it get destroyed. Why? Because it's an utter monstrosity. The standard Allegro was ugly enough, but slapping a big ugly chrome grille onto it really made it into one of the ugliest cars ever made and by far the ugliest car of the era. It made the Austin Princess/Ambassador look like a beauty. The world will be a better place once every "Vanden Plas" Allegro has been destroyed! ![]() The SD1 was a good looking car and performed well in V8 form (despite the usual build quality issues). The Allegro and more specifically the Vanden Plas most certainly was neither. -- Last edit: 2008-11-18 12:56:39 |

^ if its not your kind of car then dont be nasty |

It's just the way I feel about it. If you genuinely like this automotive abortion then by all means continue to do so. |

It wasn't destroyed, it was just involved in a fender-bender. A little bit of bodywork and it would be good as new. |
