On the second image it appears to have a third light mounted centrally on the bumper, which would suggests a Mark VI, assuming it is post war, with a non factory coach which looks a bit Hooper like |

The proportions of the car indicate that it is post WW2. We cannot tell if it is a MkVI or an R-Type from the detail shown in these photographs, we can say that the Desmo wingmirror is anachronistic as it is a 1960s design. While the coachwork looks a bit like Hoopers, my feeling is that the swage lines in the front mudguards, the lack of the drooping waistline towards the luggage boot and the cut-outs in the rear spats indicate the work of H. J. Mulliner in this case. However, I wouldn't go more than about 90%. |

1960s would rule out the Mark VI by definition, never seen an R-Type with a third light on the bumper, which doesn't mean it was never done, Mulliner kinda makes sense I suppose, down here I can't check the second image as servers here block it... |

If you go to my profile you will see my R-type and the third light on its front bumper which I can assure you has been there since the car left the factory in 1953. The other two lights are 60s Lucas fog lights converted to be front flashing indicators as I do not think it is safe to drive only on semaphore indicators these days. |

I think that I have misled you with my comment about the 1960s. I was referring to the wing mirror on the car and not to the car itself. I had a 1969 Ford Capri which was fitted with those mirrors, by me, in 1971. The Bentley is without doubt either a Mark VI, or an R-Type, and the coachwork looks like what we have already discussed. The only way to tell a Mk VI from an R-Type if it has special coachwork is to look at the steering wheel, which will have three small levers around the centre for the hand throttle, the mixture control, and the ride control if it is a Mk VI. An R-type has an automatic choke so there is only one steering wheel lever, for the ride control, finally, if the car is a 41/4 litre MkVI, there will only be one exhaust pipe instead of two. |

LOL, and here's me thinking "well, what if they are fitted at a later stage? ah well, it's a Bentley, no one in their right mind would mess with a coachbuild Bentley...." It's always much easier when you have the registration number. H J Mulliner 4 door 6 light saloon to design number 7220, body serial number 5418, supplied new in Dec 1952 to Mr Ernest Thompson of Joseph Thompson Bros (Sheffield) Ltd. Including the various prototypes, only the 34th R-type built, so indistinguishable from a late Mk VI unless you can see into the car or under the bonnet, or examine the rear of the chassis. -- Last edit: 2015-01-23 17:06:36 |
