Not "Clio Campus" only "Clio". |

◊ 2023-09-06 19:55 |

So it's a Campus Sport (trim level) not yet a Clio Campus (restyled Clio II that remained in production after the Clio III came out) |

I don't know if we can find the MY in Renault VINs, but I believe this should be a 2005. 2006 models are already Campus with the new rear style |

But the "rearlift" debuted in September 2006, at least here, so for almost a year the Clio II kept the old rear style while overlapping with the Clio III here the Campus was called "Clio Storia" and since January 2006 to September 2006 was identical with the pre-2006 Clio II (it didn't have any specific badge), then the new rear debuted for what we consider 2007MY. So there were 2006 Clios with the pre-facelift rear. |

So how should we consider the 2006 only models? Campus / Storia as trim levels or already a model itself? |
◊ 2023-09-06 23:30 |
I think so. Well, I believe in markets that used the Campus nomenclature, it was maybe considered a trim level (like this one) because I think there already was a Campus trim, I believe the range was something like Campus and Campus Sport? Here price lists reported them as Clio Storia (model name, with reduced range) already since early 2006 price lists. |

My info lists Campus November 2005-July 2006 and "Campus 2007" from September 2006. Sport available with both. I suspect that way of doing things is just so they keep the rearlift separate. I would be okay with listing this as a 2006 Clio Campus Sport in line with the info. |

If so, it was like here with the Storia (except we didn't got separate Sport versions, but an optional package), and I'd agree with you |

Found a sample car and 2006 brochure online showing badging: |

So definitely in the model name |

Campus Sport seems to be a run-out edition based on 1.2 Dynamique, Oct 05+ with a few bits added. Didn't last long. Most other Clios got Campusised at that point (eg there was a spread of "Campus &" editions which seem to have air-con added to whatever they were before). Then we got the Oct 2006 facelifted Campus - as far as I can tell these continued as "Campus &" and "Campus Sport &" versions, initially only a limited choice of usually 3 doors, but Jan 07 they restarted some 5 doors. Difficult to guess what the logic was - presumably Clio II fans didn't like Clio IIIs, so Renault tried to keep them happy for another 2-3 years. |

Here the Clio Storia lasted until late 2010/early 2011, and got another facelift (this time at the front) in July 2009. Since somewhere in 2008 they were all 5-doors, and mostly sold in economy trims, with also an LPG version. |

And consider that the Campus and the Clio III were phased out on most European markets almost contemporarily with the arrival of the Clio IV in 2013, and the Campus still was a quite good seller. In South America it lasted three more years as Clio Mio, with a fourth facelift -- Last edit: 2023-09-06 23:50:33 |

Almost a parallel case as with the Peugeot 206+ and Fiat Punto Classic. I guess it was because the new generations had grown a little too much, and they needed something in the middle |
◊ 2023-09-06 23:55 |
Here too the Campus especially in 2007/08 continued to sell relatively well, mainly to people who wanted a more simple, frugal and cheap car, or found the Clio III too much bigger and complicated. I believe Renault Italy phased out the 3-doors to not hurt the then-new Twingo II sales. Edit: yes, Alex perfectly depicted the situation, and indeed the same can be said of its rivals -- Last edit: 2023-09-06 23:56:45 |
