Looks like MG logo on rear panel so Magnette instead of Riley. If NZC 642 = Dublin, Sept-Oct 61, maybe built there among the un-named "MG saloons" mentioned for early 60s. |

By “built there” do you mean assembled from c.k.d. kits? I can’t imagine a separate body construction line being set up for either Magnettes or 4/72s, in fact nor for Camfords or Oxbridges. |

Difficult to gauge exactly what they did and when. Probably Magnettes were CKD, not many built - but they seem to have done pretty well every ADO9/38 variant, even Rileys. 1961 production for Morris (all types) was 4700, with a huge chunk of Minors likely in that figure, but Oxfords and maybe Minis filling in the rest. Lots of pics in my book of Minors being built up from bare body shells on assembly track, so it was a proper factory. |

The body shells being supplied bare suggests c.k.d. assembly rather than manufacture. It doesn’t make it any less of a proper factory, but makes it a great deal cheaper to start up. The creation of an engine or transmission from nothing requires castings, forgings and much expensive and complex machining, meaning the availability of machines and tooling on a large and expensive scale. -- Last edit: 2023-09-18 14:12:04 |
