Looks a lot like this Phantom II Sedanca de Ville by Thrupp & Maberly but seems older wheels, windscreen. Swiss Zurich plate ZH 1404/1606/1604/1406 - ZH 1404 shows up on some interesting but irrelevant Italian stuff here and here So as a starter for 10 points and a chance to win a microwave, how about Phantom I Sedanca de Ville by Thrupp & Maberly??? And can anyone explain the difference between a New Phantom and a Phantom I, preferably in easy words I can understand?? We've got big nests of both. |

dsl wrote “And can anyone explain the difference between a New Phantom and a Phantom I, preferably in easy words I can understand?? We've got big nests of both.” Nick Baldwin, in A-Z of cars of the 1920s says: - 40/50 Silver Ghost -1906 to 1925: 40/50 New Phantom - 1925 to 1929: 40/50 Phantom II - 1929 to 1935. You can tell a New Phantom from a Ghost by the overhead valve engine amongst other things. No reference is made by Baldwin to a Phantom I until, in his note about the Phantom II he says:- “The engine had the same aluminium cylinder head as used from 1928 on its predecessor (conveniently known as the PI after the PII arrived).” Thereby confirming the impression that I was under that a Phantom I and a New Phantom were the same animal. If anyone wants to suggest a campaign change of all the “Phantom Is” to “New Phantom” fine by me, but I ain’t doing it! -- Last edit: 2023-11-05 20:58:12 |

I think from what I can understand they're both the same, so only one name needed. Sir Admin can be asked to wave his magic wand to do a block update. My hunch is if we go for New Phantom, some folk might not realise and start putting them in with 21st century Phantoms, so Phantom I is safer - and it's a much bigger nest for those we've already got so folk are used to using it. Would “(New) Phantom I” work? |
