How is it possible to identify the model without the year on a fiftes American car? The priority order should be: 1: Make 2: Year 3: Model 4: Body type (note that this should be an official name and not something you make up yourself) 5: Official model code We can have a look at this car with this in mind. Supcoach has correctly identified this as a Ford so next step should be the year. Someone have already put 'Custom' as a model name. It's a 'shoebox', made by Ford between 1949-1951. The model names used were: 1949: Ford Ford Custom 1950: Deluxe Custom Deluxe 1951: Deluxe Custom As you can see, we need to know the year to know the model name. The car in the picture have a grille with one center bullet ruling out 1951. It also have the indicator housings next to the grille which rules out 1949, leaving us with 1950. To tell the upper model from the lower we need to look closely to the start of the side trim on the front fender. Here the trim is slightly larger at the front fender making it the higher end model Custom Deluxe. The shape of, what I believe is the rear window makes me want to say that it is a 4-door. The only possibility in that case would be the pillared Fordor Sedan. Last thing to add is the body code. For these years we have: 60 = Victoria 70 = Tudor Sedan 72 = Club Coupe and Business Coupe 73 = Fordor Sedan 76 = Convertible Coupe 79 = Station Wagon Plus the addition of the letter A for the entry level and B for the more luxurious model. The Business Coupe had a C and the Victoria and Station Wagon didn't have a letter. This make the subject vehicle a 1950 Ford Custom Deluxe Fordor Sedan 73B. |
