You are right that 'Targa' was first used and is even copyrighted by Porsche. I don't know why it is possible to copyright a simple Italian word but that is a different matter (targa means shield). During the 70s and 80s there were quite a lot of cars with this roof style, best remembered the BMW 02 and 3 Series converted by Baur, the Fiat X1/9 or Pontiac Firebird. The word 'Targa' was commonly used for all cars of this kind. |
