Well, if it’s not a Ghost, it must be a Phantom! May I take this opportunity to wish all my friends on IMCDB a very pleasing and happy holiday over the next few days before I say something a bit more personal and serious. At 75, one expects to suffer from the occasional bout of ill health, and I am sure that many of you might be aware of the two sessions of open heart surgery I underwent a few years back. I apologise for boring you with this, but as the group consists mainly of men, I am going to carry on. In October, following my annual well man checks I was warned of the possibility that I may have prostate cancer, and subsequent investigations have proved this to be so. In view of my cardiac problems the medics have said they will be planning treatment that avoids surgery, and I am having a course of hormone treatment which is to be followed by targetted radiotherapy. The medics say that they are confident of a cure, and that it seems to have been detected at an early enough stage to support this. The point of all this, chaps, is not to beg for your sympathy, but to say that the availability of PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen iirc) blood tests is universal, and that you all, no matter what age from middle age onwards need to get a blood test, which, while not totally infallible, might just save a life. Following a full bone scan and an interview yesterday with the oncology consultant in respect of the findings, I am pleased (to say the least) to say that the cancer has not proceeded further, and the opinion offered was that eighteen months of hormone treatment, and the four week course of targetted radiology is very likely to cure it. All I can say is, if you have the opportunity of getting a PSA blood test, do it! |
