Could this be based on a Scammell Mechanical Horse / Scarab

Did other countries make mechanical horses as well?

Like OM or Pegaso?

The design also made me think it could be Italian or Spanish, but unfortunately I couldn't find anything comparable.

Found it, it's a later FAR CM62, based on the Scammell. Early versions were similar to the original, not sure what year these modernized versions were introduced.

Well done!

However, your link didn't work for me so I did a search. That made me somewhat bewildered about model names. This drawing should in theory tell all the models, but it's rather dizzy https://www.flickr.com/photos/14024074@N05/6289716971 .

CM 70 like this https://cars-et-bus.fr/un-far-cm70-au-club ?

Or CM 75 like this https://www.flickr.com/photos/xavnco2/26402102223 ?

IXO states 1953 for their FAR CM 75 SNCF which sounds pretty believable.
It seems they have been updated with Saviem SG 2 cabin until 1972!
