I wish that these were sold here. |

What?? Are you nuts? One of the worst examples of a total dull, boring and faceless modern car. It has many details from many other cars, so that it finally looks like nothing. Just as any generic clunker. Plus the fact, that Kia, as all Korean brands, have absolutely no reputation. Not even a bad one. Known for cheap, quite reliable, but absolute uninteresting cars, which never causes any feeling by the owners. Yuk! |
◊ 2011-06-09 13:46 |
So it's basically like all current Fords, Vauxhalls and Volkswagens but it is cheaper and perhaps more reliable? |

Well, I like Kia and Hyundai. My sister and her husband have got a Hyundai ix35 (June 2010) and it´s fantastic. It has got a 163 hp petrol engine, a lot of space, it´s very well equipped, the handling and ride comfort is good, too. And it looks pretty good. The most interesting thing for them was the price. It cost about 20.000 €. And that´s very good for the quality you get. |

I had a rental for a fortnight recently - very competent and well thought-out design, pleasant to drive. But it was a 3 door and had the same problems of a claustrophobic rear cabin and minimal rear vision as the 3 door Astra ingo likes so much. It needs those big door mirrors. -- Last edit: 2011-10-06 23:32:03 |

Having tested this car, it was actually good. |
◊ 2011-06-09 14:57 |
First model was 2008 (this one having been registered in December 2007) |
◊ 2011-06-09 17:10 |
It's a two (three?) door hatchback, which means I automatically like it. We get very few two door hatchbacks in the U.S. |
◊ 2011-06-09 18:09 |
Are Focus, Golf, Astra etc interesting and causes alot of feelings?? |
◊ 2011-06-09 22:14 |
At some owners indeed. The are several fan-clubs for these cars. But mainly they all have pimped boy-racer-spazz-clunkers. My wife has positive feelings for her Astra G because it's very economical and reliable (but the problems were coming up, at more then 200.000 km), but this was a real love Huh, how mad she had been, when I took this photo - it was the last one, when she gave it away The one and only time, when I have just a little thought about these three mentioned models, was ca.12 years ago, when a friend wanted to sell his Golf. It was a -only slightly rusty- 1974-model in "viperngrünmetallic" - and with the lowest known existing VIN-number But there was a lack of money, space and also interest by me, so I didn't took the chance. |

@m.pfaffeneder: yes, sure, when you see the objective facts, Korean cars are a good choice, reliable, cheap, the garages does have a good reputation either - but I'm referring about the subjective aspects. And there the Korean brands will never have a chance. Think 20 years into the future. Do you seriously think, you will find enthusiasts and owners clubs here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XrbLXFXXiG8 or here http://www.veterama.de/de/5-galerie.html?gallery=451 or here http://www.beaulieu.co.uk/beaulieu-events/spring-autojumble or here http://www.siha.de/tce_uk.php I don't think so. Otherwise: when our K 70-scene has found together between 1988 and 1990, there was a plenty of irritations and incomprehension to find in the classic car magazines... |
◊ 2011-06-09 22:32 |
There are owners clubs out there right now for Morris Marinas, Old Datsuns and Austin Allegros. There will always be people out there who will desire some strange cars. They will think 'My Dad had one of those and I want to feel all nostalgic'. For some 2011 will not be a time of bad music and bland cars but something they remember quite fondly. It's the same with the Focus, the Astra and the Golf. There will be people who will really love these cars. |

@ingo: There are/will be some enthusiasts who really like these cars. Even in Europe are some Hyundai Clubs: http://www.hyundaiboard.de/t129-hyundai-club-forum-auf-hyundaiboard-de.html http://www.hyundaiclub.eu/ Of course there are gaps in the portfolio, but korean cars have been here in Europe for about 20 years. I think the best example are japanese cars. These cars were good, but not really nice to look at. But they launched fantastic cars over the years: Mitsubishi: Lancer Evo, 3000 GT, Starion Toyota: RAV4, Supra, Celica, MR2 Nissan: Qashqai, GT-R, Skyline Subaru: Forester, Impreza, Legacy, SVX Suzuki: Grand Vitara, Swift Mazda: 6, CX-7, 626 And the same will happen with the Koreans. They give their best. Best example is the SUV sector, because the Hyundai ix35 and the Kia Sportage are quite popular. Furthermore they produce cars for the soul, like: Kia: new Picanto (best minicar at the moment), Sportage, Soul Hyundai: Veloster, Genesis (lovely V6 engine), ix35 |

Sometimes it may not be the car itself which causes the club - it could be people who like to be in or to set up clubs who happen to own a Porridgemobile GSXi. Not meant as a cruel comment, because clubs can create ownership benefits (insurance, merchandise, spares) and fun events. |
◊ 2011-06-10 18:29 |
Maybe if she buy KIA... |
◊ 2011-06-10 18:31 |
BTW, how about Huyndai Equus? This thing is big and got V8.... |
◊ 2011-06-10 18:35 |
I would add to list Toyota: Century, Crown Majesta, Chaser Mitsubishi: Galant VR4 Nissan: Cedric, Cima, President |
◊ 2011-06-10 18:50 |
Mazda RX-7 and RX-8 spring to mind as do pretty much all Nissan Z Cars. To add to dsl's comment: I heard the Jaguar Enthusiast's Club offer you a discount from your insurance if you are a member. You don't even have to drive a Jaguar to get that. |
◊ 2011-06-10 18:57 |
This what you're talking about? http://www.jec.org.uk/member-benefits/401/club-insurance-schemes.html |

I'm happy enough with The National, British Sea Power, J Mascis, Noah & The Whale, and at the risk of cheating slightly the new Mickey Newbury box set so far in 2011. |
◊ 2011-06-10 20:38 |
And I'm happy with my newest eBay-catches. Caused by dsl's comments Link to "forum.imcdb.org" |

Yes, not uncommon. It's possible here, too, for example in my NSU-Club. Same goes for all big classic cars owner's club, especially of premium branded cars (the biggest german Mercedes-Club has over 3000 members, as the Citroen-Club, too). The insurance-companies are interested to break into this clientele. Classic car-owners generally doesn't belong to the social sediment. The insurance for classic cars is not too important for the insurances, as the rates are not high (though the incidence of loss and accidents is quite low there, so a good deal anyways) - they want to pick up the people for life- and health insurances. With this stuff you can make real money. In six weeks I've been for 20 years an insurance-employee, so I've heard "where the frog has his curls" (Literally German for "to know exactly what's what" |

We've made a test-seating in Sportage Actually she's interested in a Mitsubishi ASX, because the likes the design and especially the new, very economical Turbodiesel-engine. And our local Mitsubitsu-dealer has also KIA in his range, so we test-seated the competitor, too. The Sportage is much cheaper then the ASX, but need much more fuel. Nothing for me, both. For my general rejection at first (sure, ), but it's not comfortable inside, not enough space for the bones. A bit insolent for such big cars... One thing has really disturbed me: all the chromated parts are only chrome-plated plastic. This is unbearable for me! But later I've found out, that this is the fact at all modern cars My wife was slightly mad, when I've said loudly enough inside the dealership "One thing at first: when you'll come with any Korea-shit at home, forget the garage! Then for sure will the K 70 be parked inside" But clear words at the beginning always prevents unneccessary discussions later |

Sometimes a club is tricky enough to became the monopolist |
◊ 2011-10-04 21:42 |
@m.pfaffeneder: If you may have any interest about bearable vehicles and not the modern plastic-electronic shit, I can offer private lessons for better understanding and identifying. Location: http://www.veterama.de/ , meeting point next Saturday, at 7:45 at the tram-crossing in front of the main entrance. The offer is open for other IMCDBists, too |
◊ 2011-10-05 21:12 |
Will you be wearing a white flower on your coat Ingo? |
◊ 2011-10-05 21:48 |
Why? This is no funeral But maybe a good idea, as the clientele usually has a very similar look: http://www.veterama.de/de/5-galerie.html?gallery=451 btw.: on one pic I'm to see, too Recommended is, what some guys are doing: wearing a poster or an appliqued cloth-transparent on the back with "Looking for ...-parts. Please offer anything, you may know" or so. It would be a bit too hard for me, to look for any stuff, the fans around here are interesting in. The area is too big for that and I'm only there on Saturday. When you are walking fast through the alleys, making high-speed control-checks at the probable interesting sellers, avoiding any gossiping with your acquaintances, then you can make all rows until early afternoon - but then you are totally groggy. Especially when the weather will be as last year, around 20 degrees and sunshine. Usually the autum-Veterama is known for bad weather, often it was cold, sometimes there was heavy rain, so large areals were muddy. No kidding: specially for this event I've kept my 20-year-old Bundeswehr-boots from my service-times And until I know it now, I will be alone. Neither a K 70-friend, the Audi 50-Christian, nor the plate-Christian will come this year. All alone I cannot look for every stuff, any buddy is looking for. It's simply too much. So it would be always better, when someone is coming with you. Not only better, also helpful - for bargaining with obstinate sellers and for carrying all the boxes, fully loaded with NOS-precious items (o.k., only a dream ). As we say in German: Four eyes are seeing more than two eyes). Anyways, for urgent requests, feel free to send a SMS to xx49/160/2336356 A propos funeral and belonging stuff: does anyone having contact to Animatronixx? Via Facebook maybe? Antoine? I cannot reach him by phone or mail. Strange... Last year I've seen his hearse-fellows, but not him. -- Last edit: 2011-10-05 21:49:47 |

I think DAF555 is trying to say in a subtle manner that he is going there too. Anyhow if any of you two happens to find a left side grille spinner for a 1951 US Ford for a resonable prize I would be happy to have one. |
◊ 2011-10-05 22:07 |
Where, where?? |
◊ 2011-10-05 22:10 |
Oh, on two, as I see right now. |
◊ 2011-10-05 22:13 |
Hm. |
◊ 2011-10-05 22:31 |
@Ingo: Although I tried to keep some time to spare on that particular weekend I know now that I'm definitely not able to make it to MA next weekend. Luckily, the chances for next year are far better. Besides, it's about time you should take the Korean manufacturers seriously like this surly gentleman from Leonberg: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztTvZpRXJl4&feature=related |
◊ 2011-10-06 17:30 |
There was still activity on his account less than two weeks ago, I'll send him a message. |
◊ 2011-10-06 23:14 |
Just a few minutes ago he has sent me a mail. He's busy at the time and cannot come to the Veterama. But soon he wants to be back at IMCDb |
◊ 2011-10-06 23:14 |
@Nightrider: in the foreground left on the pics 3 and 7 |
◊ 2011-10-07 11:07 |
Sorry folks, but I've cancelled my plan to go there It's raining today and the rain shall continue the whole weekend, especially tomorrow morning. It's absolutely senseless, to visit flea- and spare parts markets, when it's raining. |
◊ 2011-10-09 15:31 |
Sorry, my bad. I've botched an IMCDb user's meeting. DAF555 was there yesterday, but not me. Hopefully he had found something for him, as he had to drive such a long distance. The 330 km one way, I had to drive, were to much for such ugly rainy weather. |
◊ 2011-10-09 16:56 |
I've heard it was already snowing in parts of Germany. |
◊ 2011-10-09 17:12 |
Yes, somewhere in mountains. But Mannheim is in the lower located Rhein-area, so not there. Very odd, if you think, that up to last weekend there were up to 29 degrees in wide parts of Germany... DAF555 has SMS'ed me, that it was raining. So worst for such an event |
◊ 2011-10-09 17:57 |
It was better than the weather forecast, yesterday it was fine until about noon. After that it was raining more or less all afternoon, but today we had sunshine. I saw some old german plates that might interest Ingo, bought some literature and saw a duplicate of my Opel Rekord. So it´s been a good weekend and now we´re heading back home, we have about 900 kms to travel. |
◊ 2011-10-10 20:44 |
Hopefully you've been successful, so that the long trip was it worth. The plates had been noticed by two plate-fellows, who had been there, too, but only three were worth to buy. The rest was too rotten, too uninteresting, too overpriced or well-known from other markets. Often all four traits together. |

Kia didn't design it, that's the point. Anyway, I disagree with Ingo's comment (for obvious reasons) |

* = "because I don't know it better" is the correct translation |

What I mean is that, it is not their own creation. |

I'd forgotten this thread. Little did I know then that I'd end up buying one - OK the estate version - and 15,000 totally reliable and enjoyable miles later I'm still perfectly happy with it. Much more common in UK than our handful of entries suggests - is there a film-making snobbery at work?? Seems a popular choice for minicab use, which is a useful indicator of basic quality and fitness-for-purpose. A seriously good car which doesn't attract attention - recommended. |
