The "Ghostbusters" ambulance is a custom "Futura" combination limousine-ambulance by Miller-Meteor, Piqua, OH, based on the 1959 Cadillac commercial chassis. 90% sure. |
◊ 2006-03-05 21:19 |
In black the original car looks more like a hearse than an ambulance ![]() By the way, all these hearse and ambulance, for which we usually use "hearse", "ambulance" or the body maker as model name, should they be called "Commercial" as model? |
◊ 2006-03-05 22:23 |
The 'official' description for ambulances and hearses is 'professional car'. As for the Ghostbusters 'ambulance' being black initially, it is, as MrCadillac stated, a 'combination', which means, the car was used as an ambulance as well as a hearse. This was common practice in rural USA, where it was infeasible to run two cars for these very similar duties. Combinations always are 'Limousine Style', which means they have quarter windows, whereas cars used strictly as hearses usually had 'landau' style blanked off quarters adorned by 'landau irons'. Some combinations had removable landau panels, so you had windows when using it as an ambulance, and landau panels when you used it as a hearse. Please find an in-depth explanation on the subject on my friend's (Ms. Hearse herself) website at www.hearse.de And entirely btw, 'hearse' is considered extremely politically incorrect nowadays. These cars are now called 'funeral coaches'. -- Last edit: 2009-11-13 04:17:19 (G-MANN) |

I try to convince her every day to get an ID for this site and help us! But she keeps telling me she doesn't know a thing about cars :-) As you can see from my website (www.heavenlyhearses.com) I concentrate on the non-American funeral cars. Her knowledge in the American professional car field would be invaluable for us. -- Last edit: 2009-11-13 04:17:37 (G-MANN) |

"Volobrian" says that this car is for sale at volostarcars.com. I went there to see, and there is an Ecto-1, but not one of the ones from the movie. The website says it comes with a certificate of authenticity, but how can it be authentic? Their car isn't even a Miller-Meteor car, it's a Eureka car painted up to look like Ecto-1. Don't believe me? Look at the different shapes of the rear quarter windows, the shape of the roof, etc. It's different from the car in the movie, therefore it cannot possibly be one of the originals. Maybe I'm just being a jerk, but I think someone needs to call them out on this. It's not right to pass it off as the real thing! -- Last edit: 2010-10-27 06:30:51 |

One of the original ECTO-1s is in Sweden nowadays. |
◊ 2006-06-26 00:41 |
Actually the ECTO-1 for sale at the Volo Auto museum is a real one from shooting. Although this particular one is not a Futura, it's a Eureka combination. It's for sale at volocars.com under Cadillac for $150,000. |
◊ 2006-06-28 04:55 |
A real one from shooting what??? The car for sale at volostarcars.com IS NOT THE ORIGINAL. It was never in either movie! It's a Eureka, but the original is a Miller-Meteor Futura. Not a Eureka. The roofline is different, the windows are different, there are a lot of differences. Trust me, as someone who has seen this movie more times than I care to remember, the "volo" car never appeared in the movie. Ever. -- Last edit: 2010-10-27 06:32:43 |

The car you are talking about is the Universal Studios Ecto-1. It was never used in either movie, it was converted after the second movie was released for Universal's "Spooktacular" show. Columbia/Sony still have the original Ecto-1, which was beautifully restored for the release of the new game, but the original Ecto-1A is still sitting on their back lot. And "mrcadillac", the link you put on here goes to a picture from the actual Ghostbusters movie, that picture isn't the Universal car, which isn't a bad replica, but it wasn't anywhere near screen-accurate. The Universal car was sold to a fan/car collector a while back, was nicely restored, and rolled across the Barrett-Jackson auction block in January 2010 with Ernie Hudson, a.k.a. Winston Zeddemore, riding shotgun. I don't know what it ended up selling for. -- Last edit: 2010-10-27 06:46:53 |

well after re-watching today - this car deserves only 4 stars I believe. Only one argument to cinvince me is, that also Aston in Goldfinger has 5 stars (also not very much used) - but the Aston has much bigger cult & pop-culture status I believe.. ![]() |

That car is quite famous, I think. I know that it is not visible a lot in the movie actually, but it is well known and was used in many derivative products. Including toys: http://www.antp.be/pic/miniatures/00000007.jpg ![]() -- Last edit: 2006-12-06 21:32:40 |

Are we giving stars based on a car's fame or its usage in the movie ![]() |
◊ 2006-12-06 22:52 |
For 5 stars it is a little special: it is fame in most of the cases. |
◊ 2006-12-06 23:01 |
Really, truthfully the movie is not about the car, nor does it center around it. The car was just used in the movie. |
◊ 2006-12-06 23:09 |
Same for lots of 5-star cars. I know that not all deserve it, but this one is famous enough for me. |
◊ 2006-12-06 23:11 |
I see. Our star system is garbage if a car is famous. I don't think I agree but won't argue. |
◊ 2006-12-06 23:13 |
![]() A solution (that I think since some time) is to remove the 5-star rating and use 4-star as maximum ![]() -- Last edit: 2006-12-06 23:13:16 |

At any rate, if fame is a criteria, you should revise the star explanation in the Help/FAQ section. |
◊ 2006-12-06 23:25 |
I think we should a fifth star (as long as it is used in moderation) for vehicles, were the film centers around the vehicle (like Christine for example) However a vehicle (no matter what kind it is) should not be rewarded a fifth star just because it’s considered popular. At least that’s my opinion on the subject. ![]() -- Last edit: 2006-12-06 23:26:36 |
◊ 2006-12-06 23:28 |
As mentionned above, the Aston Martin of James Bond is not seen that much. And what about the Batmobile? It is hard to not consider some famous car as very important. On the other hand, lots of cars are listed with 5-stars when they do not deserve it, as they are not famous and not the centre of the movie. To see all 5-star cars: /vehicles.php?resultsStyle=asImages&sortBy=4&make=&model=&page=1 (until the beginning of 7th page) There are too much of these, that's sure. -- Last edit: 2006-12-06 23:30:07 |
◊ 2006-12-06 23:42 |
I checked those I posted -- seven so far -- and they are justified as the film centres about these vehicles. Perhaps all contributors can do likewise to get rid off "5-stars-because-I-like-that-car-so-much" classifications. ![]() |

Hey Guys, Im new to the forum, but was looking for some video clips of a car I own that was in "Isnt She Great" with Bette Midler, and couldnt help but stumble on this thread... There seems to be alot of misconception in here, and I dont mean to step on toes or offend anyone, but the REAL ecto one, as used in the films for the Ghostbusters series, was an S&S (stands for Sayers and Scoville) and were Chassis modifications done by the Hess and Einhardt Company. Other than clones built by fans on the private scale, no M&M was used in any of the film takes for Ghostbusters, in some early scenes of the movie when they first get "the car" as a decomissioned combo, you can even see the tell-tale Sayers and Scoville hood decor, (looks like a Diamond shape, with the top opened wide) Sorry for any misconceptions, or if Ive offended anyone, on the same accord, I hope I was able to answer your question. Check out my Caddy in Isnt She Great! Look for my 71 Bug in 2 upcoming Nike Commercials! |
◊ 2007-03-31 06:29 |
I agree with 4 stars due to plot, although the choice of the 59 model styling, I believe has a lot to do with the quirkiness of the plot and its main characters (the Ghostbusters), the fact that they used an old firehouse is also central to this theme. In the 80s, most of these cars had disappeared from the radar screen, and the real estate boom was taking care of the historic buildings that remained. The role of the Ghostbusters, in my opinion, was to slap the face of convention and conventional science (I ain't afraid of no ghost!). -- Last edit: 2007-03-31 06:29:23 |

btw how do you search for cars based on star rating? just browsing: the truck in Smokey and the Bandit should have 5 stars, probably not the police car, though it was run pretty hard ![]() Rain Man good. Thelma and Louise good. I guess the idea is would the movie, not just a scene, be possible with any other car in its place? Other than the deal with Pontiac, could the movie have been made with a Camaro, for example? Answer no: the German Eagle was not available on a Camaro. -- Last edit: 2007-03-31 06:43:28 |

I hate to break it to you, "obnoxiousblue", but the Ghostbusters car is a Miller-Meteor Futura, not a Sayers & Scovill. The S&S and Hess & Eisenhardt ambulances had a much squarer roofline, and none of them had the rear corner windows. The "diamond opened up" that you see on the hood is the Cadillac V-8 hood emblem, every 1959 Cadillac had them. Don't believe me? Look up 1959 Cadillac professional cars, and take a very close look. The Ecto-1 is a Miller-Meteor, not an S&S, H&S, Eureka, Superior, or any other make. -- Last edit: 2010-10-27 06:49:05 |

I'm going to correct something that bugged me for many years now: The Ecto-1 and Ecto-1A are listed as Miller-Meteor Futura and possibly I may have started this myself back then. "Futura" is the name of a styling level, but not the exact model name, especially not for the Ghostbusters ambulances. The correct designation is actually "Sentinel" and I'm going to change this now. -- Last edit: 2019-03-10 14:24:55 |
◊ 2019-07-02 22:14 |
Hey AnimatronixX, Isn't the original Ecto a Futura Duplex? I've seen photos of the original build tag and I'm 99.9% sure it says Duplex. The Miller Meteor Sentinel, Ambulandau, and Volunteer were the ambulance versions, and I'm pretty sure they came with the Miller Meteor-specific red "tunnel" lights on the roof. Check out this comprehensive list of 1959 Cadillac commercial chassis "professional" cars: https://www.newcadillacdatabase.org/static/CDB/Dbas_txt/prof59.htm |
◊ 2019-07-02 22:43 |
@moparguy1973 You mean the angular-shaped, Miller-Meteor exclusive "Safe-T-Vu" roof lights, correct? These were available at extra cost for the Sentinel. As opposed to real tunnel lights, they were not incorporated in the structure of the roof and mounted on top instead. As we can't trust the interior of all the Ecto-1 conversions, we can't be sure which ones were based on straight ambulances or (Duplex) combinations. I still think the Sentinel is a lot more likely here. If I can get a proof picture of the build tag, I'll change my mind though, as I'm always open to corrections. As we don't exactly know how many Ecto-1 units were used in the movie(s), the universal identification for all of them gets even harder. Edit: I'm no Ghostbusters aficionado and never watched this movie. The first two thumbnails clearly show a black Futura Limousine Duplex combination, but I don't think it's the same car we later see as the final Ecto-1?!? If it is, then you are right. Do we know which car they converted? Are there any pictures showing the Ecto-1 in construction? -- Last edit: 2019-07-03 11:58:21 |
