Many Passats do not have engine displacement listed, so I was hesistant to add it. I'd be happy to have it, however. |

I'm not sure if it was handled in the same way also in Italy, but in Germany and most EU markets, VW dit not use the displacement in official documents in the period between the mid-1980s and mid-1990s, instead using the power output in kW. For example, check this German price list published by VW in 1989 for the 1990 Passat B3: you won't find anything about displacements, only power outputs. I guess they did this way because their engines were often underpowered compared to competitors with same displacements (which often made them more reliable, though) -- Last edit: 2024-12-09 00:36:09 |

Wasn't insurance or some road tax linked with power output in Germany around the same period? |

They were both already based on the displacement as far as I know, meanwhile they gradually introduced emission classes to calculate the road tax |

Oh ok, I thought reading something back then like the reason the Golf III only had 60 PS/DIN from 1.4 lt. was for tax/insurance purposes in Germany. But maybe not true after all. |

A lower output allowed to fit in a lower emission class, so this can be true in any case. For the same reason, the same Golf III 1.4 was detuned to 55 PS for Austria |

Interestingly, we too got a Golf III with such detuned 1.4 with 55hp briefly in 1993-94 (alongside the 60hp version) because for a couple of years there was a law saying that novice drivers couldn't drive a car that reached more than 150 km/h. |
