It looks like 1964 Dodge Polara 500, but those white reversing lights should be in the middle. |

Why do the steerin'wheel has been placed on the left-side and not on the right-side,as it usually must be the use in Japan? |

Probably because the car was built with LHD and it would cost too much to convert it. I've seen people import American cars into Japan and keep the LHD. The '92-'95 Ford Taurus for example was imported into Japan by a few people and they kept the 6-passenger configuration and LHD, but changed the lights and mirrors to conform to the laws. |

It's fairly common to keep LHD cars that way when imported into a RHD country, unless the local rules say otherwise. Singapore won't allow any LHD cars to be imported permamently. |

I see fender mounted mirrors... Should we list this made for Japan |

Yes, in the 1950's to 70's, american imports to japan, were not modified except for mirrors and maybe indicators |

Driven by Peter Maivia, the grandfather of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. |

Made for Japan due to fender mounted mirrors and taillights arrangement. |

Here is what the taillight should look like: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1964_Dodge_Polara_500_(35192355210).jpg |

Incidentally, I always found the white top on the black Polara (I used to think dark blue) was unusual, but noticed a number of other large American cars that are in this same scheme around "Osato Chemicals Ltd" (The New Otani Hotel). I understand that these are "hire cars", and basically taxis that are reserved by phone. I do not know the difference from other "reserve by phone" taxi services other than the color combination and rather grand (by Japanese standards) size of these cars. The New Otani has a fullsize 1965 Pontiac that can be seen as Aki accelarates to the scoop up 007 and away from the Toyota Crown assassins. After the 2000GT swings past the building's entrance to meet up with the Crown goons, the edge of the parking lot has couple of 1963 Dodge Polara sedans, and a 1964 Pontiac (Catalina, Parisienne, or Laurentian) that can be seen. Someone else may be able to extend the knowledge of this curiosity, but my belief is that this is a specific taxi company or represents a specific method in 1960s Tokyo. The contributor 'Qball' from Japan comments on the 1965 Pontiac Catalina entry that it is a "livery car" as indicated by green plates. This Dodge also has green plates, and the same white roof / black body combination of that Catalina. -- Last edit: 2021-11-30 03:34:33 |
