The Lada X-Cross 5 crossover, assembled at the AvtoVAZ site in St. Petersburg, will not go on sale. As the Avtopotok Telegram channel writes, citing its own sources at the enterprise, the project was closed after assembling 170 units of the SUV.
The number of units in the first batch of Lada X-Cross 5 was recently confirmed by the head of AvtoVAZ, Maxim Sokolov, saying that some of the crossovers were sold to corporate clients, others were sent to Tolyatti, and the head of the plant is already using one of the SUVs himself.

is there any reason ( other than the one that makes the news.. ) for them to built only this few ?

 Yes, I like it too. Some recent Bestune designs look pretty interesting to me.

It's unclear why the production was stopped, but it seems that FAW didn't agree with some localization changes that AvtoVAZ wanted to make to the car (probably they were planning to remove some features to reduce the price). It's also not clear if the cooperation between FAW and AvtoVAZ will continue and spawn other rebrandings. The only confirmed upcoming model for Lada is the Iskra, a successor to the Granta, which will be based on a Renault/Dacia platform. Note that Renault has got the right to buy back AvtoVAZ within six years of the sale (May 2022)
