It was a one-off special built for the 1965 race as a fully self-contained unit. After the previous transporter (a mostly normal Landie) + trailer crashed on the way back home from the 64 test weekend, damaging the BRM too much to be repaired in time for the 64 race, this was commissioned for 65. Used much of the design from the FC SMOMOT (Single Man, One Machine, One Team) prototype derived in turn from a two ton truck prototype - no I don't really know anything more about the SMOMOT and never seen a picture. Designed with what looks like a SIIB FC cab (although SIIB didn't arrive until Jan 67) and front wheel drive only, the load bed used Ibben trailer ground-level loading suspension so it could descend and retract the rear wheels to give a gentle slope to drive the car up and inside. I've got a book pick of this where it looks like a stranded whale with a broken axle. Only used for the two 1965 Le Mans visits, then kept by the factory as a development hack until it wore out and was scrapped. |
