Don't remember was it really like that in series, but in article they wrote that in scenes set in the 1960s/early 1970s it had to be visible only from the left side and in scenes set later (later part of 1970s) only from the right side. Scenes of both periods were filmed in the same time - in "1960s" the car was meant to look more fresh and in the "late 1970s" it already had imitations of rust, scratches etc. placed only on the right side of the body.
