Interestingly fitted w/ non standard winch (looks like from the earlier WC series) and the windhsield is removed and replaced with a one piece unit. Most likley for better pictures of the in cab filming? Other non standard items for a civilain tow truck as well. |

This vehicle was used throughout most of the movie. 4 stars maybe? |

I think the vehicles to earn 4 stars should be the ones that were parked when Smiler Grogan (Jimmy Durante) uttered his last words. Still open for debate. |

The winch looks like a Weaver Auto Crane. It's hand-powered from the '20s. I used to have one on a service-station truck. The purpose of the winch was not to transport the car, but rather to raise the front wheels so that they could be placed on a dolly. Then the dolly was towed behind the truck to the destination. This was the Weaver Auto Ambulance. I didn't have the dolly part. Some cranes are still found mounted in trucks, but the dollies did not survive as well. I wish I could post a photo of my old crane. The one in the movie looks just like it, but the crane is hard to see in this view. |

I always wondered who did the lettering on the doors, looks like the Ed Roth style but then I guess any sign writer of the period could do it like that... |

I love how Jonathan Winters trashed the whole garage and then goes out and sees the two truck and thinks, "Fuck it!" and steals the truck. |

This is one of my favorite cars/trucks in the movie. I love the white paint job with the red outline, with the gas can on the side. Would love to restore one of these. They look to be pretty rare now a days too, around 1000 left according to the registry. http://www.g741.org/m37registry/index.php |

I drove an M-37 in the military, and later bought one when I got out. All together I drove one for 5 years and I can say without any equivocation that there is no M-37 in the world that could accelerate or drive anywhere near as fast as the one in this movie. The absolute top speed was 52 MPH, and it would take near a minute to get there. I'm not saying it isn't an M-37 but it has to have been modified with a different drive train. Also, the M-37 had a two piece windshield with a center support bar while this one had a one piece full windshield. Mine, which was a duplicate of the Army one I drove ![]() -- Last edit: 2019-06-30 13:46:51 (AnimatronixX) |
