It seems American cars were very popular in France in teh 40s and 50s. Was that the case?

As shown in all these movies American cars were quite diffused in France in the thirties and in the late forties and fifties and after the war some makes like Oldsmobile seem to have had a larger diffusion compared to other export markets .However , the Buick here is a ww II model of 1941 .It may have been imported after the war by US military employees stationed in France or Germany or more recently by a car collector.Since it has a non-original bumper ,I think the first possibility seems higher.

Thanks. Looks like France is a good place to go looking for a pre '60 American car.

A lot of american cars were imported to France in the 50's, because:
1 - Almost all the french luxurious brand like Delahaye, Delage, Salmson disappeared just after the WW2. Then, rich people bought american cars.
2 - In Colonies, specially in Morocco, americans cars were common, because of low taxes in Tanger and Casablanca.

After the Suez crise, sales of these cars decreased in France, and Morocco became free.
Effectively, pre '57 american cars are easy to find, specially in south of France, where a lot of Morocco's cars ended up.

...I would complete with this comments...with EEC market in 1957, penetration of german (mostly Mercedes first, then BMW) or italian luxury (sports ...) cars became noticeable on french market, even more for popular cars of course (Ford,Opel,Fiat...), and in the same while the "nec plus ultra" to be "in" for rich people was to drive a british car (Rolls, Bentley, Jaguar, Rover...or sports MG, Triumph..)... therefore part of US cars on french market decreased regularly since the 1960's...and increasing cost of petrol since that time couldn't help US car industry...in the same while, unfortunately for US industry, quality and performances of european cars have supplanted for the long term a big part of US car production...Of course there were some exception, for instance, with cars as Mustang, Corvette which had their "aficionados" in France too...
