I remember Ford ran an ad featuring this, They said it was a '68. |

Found a clip of the chase involving the truck (CCF will really enjoy it) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghXatUGIi9g These old Ford’s were practically bulletproof; they were built heavy with robust parts and used thick steel/metal. |

1969 based on the grille design. |

I agree. I think the word of the Ford Motor Company ought to trump the grille. |

I remember that commercial; only one problem: Watch the chase - at 3:16 you can see both front wheels have been replaced. Something must have broken somewhere. |

Probably it gotten damaged during its jump See Raul1983's original thumbnails. -- Last edit: 2013-05-04 20:11:27 |

No, it is a 1968. The grille in 1969, had a groove stamped into the horizontal bar. The grille on Majestyk's truck does not have the groove, the bar extends out (convex). More significant is that in 1969, side AND rear reflectors were required with the rear reflectors located below the taillights. In 1968, ONLY side reflectors were required. Majestyk's truck clearly has only side reflectors. From these two differences it would have to be a 1968. http://www.fordification.com/tech/67-72ID_01.htm -- Last edit: 2013-10-02 10:42:48 |

Hmm.. Something I need to double check here. For my reference. |

Yeah, it's a 1968. |

Both 1968/69 do have front and rear side retroreflectors as shown here. According to the Wagner book, the thick central horizontal seems to be convex version on the 1969 model year, but I can't tell from the 1968 version Does anyone have the official 1968 and 1969 Ford F-Series truck brochure that we can verify this discrepancy |

It does seem like there are a lot of 1969s without a groove. http://www.flickr.com/photos/andrew-turnbull/5450184092/in/photostream/ The 1968s had the grille sections blacked out and the 1969s didn't. Since Majestyk's grille sections aren't blacked out, I suppose we have to say it is a 1969. |

See the vertical bars in the 1968 grille are black. You can see it in both my flickr pictures and the Fordification pictures. But this pertains to chrome grilles and not necessarily painted grilles. Fordification: 1967 Three trim levels (base, Custom Cab and Ranger) were offered. The Ranger had color-keyed carpeting and door panels and plusher seats (in a cab that was 3 inches wider inside than it's predecessor) and chrome exterior trim (such as the grille) standard. 1968 The grille got a new look. To comply with Federal safety standards, reflectors were added to the hood emblems and the rear of the bed. (The grille shown here is the optional Ranger version. The grille emblem was only used in '68-'69) 1969 The grille was the same as 1968 except that a groove was stamped on the center horizontal bar. Corinthian White was used for the standard grille which changed again midyear to anodized, and on Ranger models the groove in the aluminum grille was painted red. The headlight surrounds were painted black in the center and included the grille emblem, which was the last year this grille emblem was used. So the 1969 grilles may not have had a groove unless they were aluminum grilles. So, standard 1968 painted grilles and standard 1969 painted grilles may have been the same, and 1968s and 1969s had the same side maker lights, thus making Majestyk’s pickup impossible to distinguish between a 1968 and 1969 except for the word of its maker the Ford Motor Company. -- Last edit: 2013-10-03 20:45:37 |

It appears that there are at least two trucks used. Some scenes show a blue steering wheel and some show a black steering wheel. |

I remember that commercial too. Here it is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAFKqkifqBM I have been looking for it for a long time. Never could find it. I thought it was longer. Maybe this is just the quickie version. They say it's a 1968, right in the commercial. I knew it was a 1968, I have one same color but it's a Ranger so it has the shiny trim etc. Easier to tell the year with the Ranger (shiny) grill than with a painted grill. Painted grills from factory were white only. Both 1968/69 have reflectors on the bed WHEN VIEWED FROM THE SIDE. Close inspection of the grill (1968 has convex center bar with no groove) and also 1968, NO small square reflectors DIRECTLY BELOW the taillights when viewed from the rear. These are the only ways to determine if it's 1968/69. |

I posted the 1969 front grille at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1969_ford_f-250_%28grille%29.jpg , but I haven't found the 1968 grille yet. |

Rewatching the chase just now, this struck me as well. The truck used through most of the movie has blue metallic paint on the door jams and insides of the cab, and has a horn ring on the steering wheel, indicating either a mid-level Custom interior or a top-level Ranger interior (I never saw the seats well enough to tell which). But for several interior shots during the chase scene itself, the insides of the cab are black, and the truck has a black steering wheel with no horn ring, indicating a base-level Standard interior. |

After hitting the car of the bandits with this pick up, the front face of the machine is damaged. One minute later, it is intact! These Ford pickups are really tough! -- Last edit: 2019-01-24 23:33:30 |

I believe the words you’re looking for are “Built Ford Tough” |

Of course. It's a pun with the slogan of Ford pick-up trucks. |

Is anyone ever going to change the year to a 1968? In 1969, they added a tiny square reflector in the rear. I DON'T mean the ones on the SIDE of the bed because both 68/69 have those. I mean the ones directly BELOW the TAIL LIGHTS and only visible when looking at the back of the truck. As in looking at the tailgate. This truck does not have those. (See "police car fan's" next to last pic above) It doesn't have them because they were not added until 1969. The grille doesn't have the 1969 groove it is 1968 convex. This truck is a 1968! Also do you think Ford would make a commercial with a truck they built and not know what year it was? Ford says it's a 1968. How much more proof do you need? -- Last edit: 2020-07-20 13:42:08 |
