gliffhanger ◊ 2007-01-29 12:48	The Pininfarina-styled 308 GTB was introduced at the Paris Motor Show in 1975 as a supplement to the odd Bertone-shaped Dino 308 GT4 and a replacement for the 246 Dino. Unlike the plain 2+2 GT4, the GTB was a 2-seater with aggressive lines, and has been called one of the most beautiful of all Ferraris. The targa topped 308GTS was made famous on the Magnum P.I. television show. The mechanically similar 308GT4 shared much with the original 206 Dino, and the 308. Both sit on the same tube-frame platform, with a 92 in wheelbase, and 4-wheel double wishbone independent suspension. The V8 engine is a DOHC design, with four Weber 40DCNF carburetors. European versions produced 255 hp (190 kW) at 7,700 rpm, but American versions were down to 240 hp (178 kW) at 6,600 rpm due to emissions control devices. A notable aspect of the early 308 GTB was that, although still built by Carrozzeria Scaglietti, the 308's bodywork was entirely made of fiberglass . This lasted until June, 1977, when the 308 was switched to steel. The 308 models are the most common historical Ferrari models, with over 12,000 produced. Although it is a common car, and is priced at accessible levels today, the 308 models are embraced by Ferrari fans and critics today. In 2004, Sports Car International named this car number five on the list of Top Sports Cars of the 1970s.

The GTSi used fuel injection rather than carburetion but produced less power than the older model. It was replaced in 1982 with the GTS QV (quad valve) until the end of the 308 in ’85. Alexander ◊ 2008-04-19 01:48	During the early seasons a Ferrari 308 GTS was used, as can clearly be seen in the first of the small pictures. Production of the GTSi only started in 1981, followed by the GTSi Quattrovalvole in 1982. Apparently all versions were used. They can be kept apart by the rear inscription: GTSi: GTSi Quattrovalvole: I will try to find appropriate images for all subversions in due time.

GTSi models were fuel injected, instead of a carb, hence the "i" designation, although the carb models had higher power output. Early late 70's Ferrari 308 GTB models were made of fiberglass bodies (rare) and were changed to steel bodies shortly afterwards. GTB and GTS models could be distinguished easily by looking at the outside rear quarter glass window to see if it had a full louver cover (GTS) or a partial louver cover (GTB) or by the black targa top, which was available only on the GTS models. Quattrovalvole (quattrovalve) US models had power boosted to match the European specs, due to US emissions regulations and engine changes, most notably, the catalytic converter. The rear roof spoiler was optional. A superbly stunning vehicle indeed!
MaindrianPace ◊ 2009-02-14 02:46	A 1978 Ferrari 308 GTS is actually the first car to have four barrel Weber carburetors. In an interesting bit of trivia, famed journalist and writer P.J. O'Rourke wrote an essay about the same exact 1978 308 GTS that was used in the Pilot Movie (and all of Season One). It's called Ferrari Refutes the Decline of The West, and it appeared in his book Republican Party Reptile (1989). In 1979, Ferrari asked him (and his boss at Car & Driver magazine) to drive the car from New York to L.A (as part of the process to get the car to Hawaii) and write an essay about it. The result was a fantastic road trip story at 140 mph! The car was used during the first season. A 1980 Ferrarri 308 GTSi is actually the first car to have fuel Bosch Digiplex fuel injection (replacing four barrel Weber carburetors). The car which actually belongs to novelist Robin Masters, and is used by Tom Selleck's character Thomas Sullivan "Tom" Magnum IV which is actually a guest of Robin's on the Hawaiian estate. The GTSi model was used during the second season through third season. A 1984 Ferrari 308 GTSi Quattrovalvole is actually the first car to have fuel injection with quattrovalvole because the United States models had to power boosted, and match horsepower to the European models, and meet the specs. The Quattrovalvole model was used during the fourth season through the eighth season. A bunch of different model years were used in the television series Magnum P.I. they actually ranged from 1978 through 1985 with some labling GTS, GTSi GTSi Quattrovalole. I'm going to repost all three models on separate pages, and find what episode the previous picture is from, and what website. HunterMan ◊ 2009-11-01 07:56	I loved this show growing up and have the complete series on DVD! I've researched, in the past, what years and/or models of Ferraris that were used on the show. This is what I learned were the Ferrari years and models: 1979 308 GTS 1981 308 GTSi *1984 308 GTS QV-(Used for the remainder of the show!) I'm not totally positive about this, but I don't remember reading or finding anything about a 1978 Ferrari 308 being used in the show. I found they started with a new 79. I read that Manetti had bought one of the Ferraris too...but I think he's since sold it. But, I'm not 100% sure...he could still have it? This Ferrari is a 1981 model. From my own research, I've found there were 3 different Ferraris used throughout the show: a 1979 308 GTS, a 1981 308 GTSi, and a 1984 308 GTS QV.
