Just Mercedes, Daimler-Mercedes and Benz joined 1926. |

That's annoying... the way the site is made it converts all Mercedes to Mercedes-Benz. This is needed for old links and to allow people to search recent MB by typing only "Mercedes" |

I think, same logical must be applied between Mercedes and Benz,... (a Benz before 1926, is not automatically linked to Mercedes-Benz, so should be a vintage Mercedes )... Too much simplifications made to satisfy and to make easier what a majority of people wants to see, to get, to find..etc ...is not intellectually correct, and often breads distorsion with the reality and the truth, ...and unconsciously it is a logic of "market thinking" unfortunately so widely overspread nowadays ... (I could extend to many other subjects ...) Now, I think that people typing Mercedes, would quickly understand what to do in order to find genuine Mercedes-Benz , recent or not, when he'll see few pictures of vintage Mercedes of 1888/1925 period I think the link to "Mercedes-Benz" should be only with different possible way of typing Mercedes-Benz (with or without hyphen, accent..) Don't you think? -- Last edit: 2006-02-05 16:22:53 |

Actually this was made because for long time we used only Mercedes as make, and that few sites linked to the Mercedes search page of IMDB. I did the same for VW. I could change that, but won't we get problems with people adding Mercedes Benz as Mercedes ? |

.. do you mean people who would search a Mercedes (pre-1926) with typing Mercedes Benz? -- Last edit: 2006-02-05 16:35:58 |

No, I mean that if me or somebody else forget that we have distinct makes (Mercedes & Mercedes-Benz) there would be some Mercedes-Benz listed as Mercedes, and we would have to sometimes check them to correct that. Not a very big problem. |

..oh yes!... but I think , first: we are not so many admin, second: each of us knows that Mercedes-Benz is the exact name of what people use to call Mercedes.. |

Could you modify the search to ask an additional question? If mercedes is entered the additional qustion would be "do you want mercedes or mercedes-benz. I ask because a search on only mercedes gives only the car above while a search on mercedes-benz gives the others. This could mislead some searchers. -- Last edit: 2006-02-05 16:54:11 |

that's a fair idea, but Antoine has the key for it |

That's joins the idea that I had and about which we already discussed: on some search/vehicle listing pages, it would be useful to add extra info. Like for the Austin Mini specify the other possible names, or for the Lada mention that it has other names in other countries. |

Your discussion prompts me again to suggest a glossary. We (i.e. Antoine) could place a link in the headline "(make model) in movies and TV series" saying something like "more about this brand name". It is not only for Benz, Daimler (D and GB), Mercedes, but also good for Edsel or Thames by Ford, the British and American badge engineering, why military vehicles have more than one maker, that Bayrische Motoren Werke is abbreviated to BMW but VW should be written Volkswagen, and so on. I think you get my point -- Last edit: 2006-02-05 17:21:49 |

That's a little to that that I was thinking. Actually I was thinking to an info page, that all admins could edit, and that would be displayed before the thumbnails of the first page of vehicles listing (e.g. with a reduced number of thumbnails on that first page, then). |

Now that we can list Mercedes separately from Mercedes-Benz, maybe there are other Mercedes to reclass ? |
