White sedan next to police cars is an Australian designed Austin Tasman. Upmarket versions were called the Austin Kimberley. These were Leyland Australia's replacement for the Austin 1800 and had a transverse mounted six cylinder engine, hence the X6 designation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austin_Tasman http://www.elevenhundred.com/kimberley/index.htm -- Last edit: 2009-01-28 06:25:27 |

I'd say origin: Australia. The Aronline page claims: 'The Austin Kimberley and Austin Tasman were developed and styled by Leyland Australia as a replacement for the Austin 1800'. |

Leyland Australia engineers' effort was significant. Even door handles were different because of local law demands. It's much more Australian design than Polish design in Polski Fiat 125p. |

Not so clear cut. The notchback body started as an abandoned UK Maxi saloon proposal which was morphed onto ADO17 instead![]() Plate looks like NOB 545F or similar = Birmingham, April 1968. Leyland Aus may have done some of the morphing, but Longbridge continued involvement for a Vanden Plas ADO17 proposal, possibly predating the Kimberley/Tasman range. I think I've read that the Aus contribution was more about the oily bits, developing the 6cyl version of the Maxi E-series engine which was also used in Aus Marinas and then the design was reverse-imported to UK for the ADO17 Mk3 2200 versions. But I'm not arguing strongly, and have changed our small bunch of Kimberleys to match. |
